How bad is the job situation in your area?

Options
I've been looking for another job since Christmas, nothing to fancy just perhaps factory or warehouse work, I have saw 1 job advertised which I applied for but never got but thats been it, Checking the jobcentre there seems to be 1 local job per week which 9/10 is a clearner or waitress, there simply is no work out there. I heard on the news yesterday 1 in 4 18-24 year old are unemployed, and unemployment has risen again in N.I for another month with an extra 600 people signing on last month. Its all very very sad, there doesn't seem to be any opertunity out there, I am lucky I have a job at the moment.

I've just done a search on the job centre for where I live (Norwich) and it says there were 100 jobs added in the last week. Thats for all manner of jobs though. So, it doesn't seem too bad here, but I'm not sure how jobs there would be if we weren't in recession.

Tesco in our area recently advertised for 15 jobs (5 full time, 10 part time), nothing fancy just stacking shelves, tills etc. They received over 2500 applications for 15 jobs.

There are a few jobs on the direct.gov website in our area, but a lot are skilled positions, or 'relevant experience essential' positions.

So whilst there may be a few jobs available, the number of people going for these jobs is what makes it harder to get one.

    Are there any duplcates?
How many have been auto re-issued but have actually been filled?
How many are specific (i.e. say "experience essential" or similar)?

How many call centre or commission based sales jobs. Not that I have anything against these jobs, I'm just wondering
  • I am in central London and I remember the leader of a back to work session excitedly telling us that fifteen new jobs had been advertised in London 'THAT DAY!!!!'

    In central London.

    It is shocking.
  • Here in Cornwall it is appalling. Very few jobs, I think about 2 or 3 new jobs per week, and these are p/t cleaning or sales jobs which rely on commission to provide income.

As our local council is going to be making huge cuts in staffing to save money it's going to get worse rather than better, certainly over the next year or two.

The only slight positive is that the holiday season starts in a couple of months and will provide some seasonal work (at NMW of course).
  • I live in Swindon and the situation is appalling.

We have a couple of major employers here - Honda (manufacturing), Zurich, and Nationwide (financial services)

Zurich and nationwide have really slowed up recruitment (and if your credit rating is less than perfect ypoou can't get a job there anyway, plus Zurich has actually made huge redundancies).

Honda used to employ over 6000 people a couple of years ago, but are down to just over 3000 people. It is interesting to note that the PM visited Honda the other day, and talked about them 'starting to take people on again'. The reality is that this is for some very select vacancies, requiring very specific qualifications. In the main with Honda, any vacancies are only filled internally. (My OH works in a senior position for them so I am 'in the know').

The only other vacancies tend to my commission only jobs, and they are inundated with applications.

Because I drive, I have looked further afield, and it doesn't seem much better for about a 50 mile radius (encompassing Reading, Bristol, Gloucester).

    Bad.

I'm in the East Midlands which was 8% unemployment last time I looked, but yes the figure for the West is even worse.

I've just been for a 45 minute pep talk at the job centre, we covered various topics and in fact had a very pleasant and wide ranging chat, the employment aspect was dismissed early on because as the adviser agreed there was nothing to apply for.

I live in Kirklees in west Yorkshire and not including the huge impending council cuts the job market is pretty tough. My area was one of the hardest hit (as well as Bradford) at the beginning of the recession and its getting worse. Most jobs available are sales ,cleaning or very highly qualified posts. Unemployment was high before 2008 as it never really recovered around here from the previous recession and in the school I work in 80% of the kids qualify for free school meals which means they come from the lowest income families. Its a northern manufacturing area and as everyone knows manufacturing is being hammered.

I believe the Welsh valleys are on a par with the likes of Romania economically, nothing other than the supermarkets who employ and then only a fraction.

The pubs that haven't closed down for good usually only open from Thurs to Sun. Houses are tough to sell and the council are sacking everyone then will employ the workers again on less money.

    It's bad.
