didn't receive dla renewal form

Hi,

Just found out that my dla has been stopped. They apparently sent the renewal form out in September but I didn't receive it. I have been told I have to make a fresh claim and that the whole process could take months before a decision is reached.

I realise I should have been aware that my dla was up for renewal but for some reason I was sure my award didn't run out until next year. You would think there would be a system in place where if the forms aren't returned by a certain date a final letter confirming that they haven't received the forms would be sent to you.

They must surely realise that occasionally things get lost in the post. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Is making a fresh claim the only way forward?

DLA no longer send out "reminder" letters following the sending of a renewal claim pack. I'm afriad the onus is on you to keep an eye on the end date of your award.
If your award has only ended very recently it may be that the DM will accept your new claim pack as a renewal of the previous claim. You will have to request this when returning the new claim pack, advising them of the reasons why you did not return your renewal in time.

All renewals are treated as new claims so a new claim is the only way forward, do you have the evidence of your disability ready to go with the form?

If you have the claim should be quicker, also let everyone involved in your care know that you are currently applying for DLA so that they can respond ASAP if they are asked for further information about you.

Its not the systems fault that you no longer get DLA but yours, you were sent the forms and you didnt realise when it ran out, make sure that you dont cause yourself further problems by letting everyone know that you no longer recieve DLA ie. LHA/TCO/ctb/IS etc.
  • Thanks for your replies.

I only found out my dla had stopped when I checked my bank yesterday and noticed a reduced dla payment. I phoned them to ask why and was told because I hadn't returned my renewal form my claim has been closed. When I pointed out I hadn't received a renewal form I was told I would have to make a new claim.

I realise that I should have kept a closer eye on when my claim was due to end but it seems a daft system where it's down to the claimant, many of whom could have a mental disorder, to keep track of the claim.

so it should be up to the system to not only send out hunfreds of thousands of renewel forms on time, but to also check to make sure all these forms havent been lost/misplaced/forgotten about?
surely its easier for the claiment to keep track of their 1 claim?

my dla stopped on the 12/02/12 and i have only found out on 15/03/12. i rang them six times and they said i hadn't sent my renewal form off. i was only told on the 6th phone call that they hadn't sent me one out and i am going to lose the money in between the dates above. they say i have to make a fresh claim and it will be classed as a NEW claim not a renewal and they won't back date it. during this time my father has past away (16/02/2012) and i am in a right state because i cannot get no sense even though its their fault for not sending me a renewal form out. it cost me £9 in phone calls that day only to be told that they haven't sent me one out in the first place. if they send a renewal form out 6 months before why has it taken my phone call to realize its 7 months i have been waiting. why don't they let people know when they should have received a renewal form. but as always they pass the book

its not that hard, not that long ago they would issue a computer generated letter after 4 weeks as a reminder, one has to suspect their motives for stopping this

i do understabd what you are saying. but its insane to think the system should chase people that 'may' be entitled to money.
i have one claim dor which i am responsible.
surely in exchange for benefit, it isnt too much to expect a claimant to notice their claim is near its end?

And surely it's reasonable that some consideration should be given to the fact that those given a benefit on the basis of being disabled may in fact be disabled when it comes to reliably being able to schedule exactly when they need to chase up their award.

Not everyone is together enough mentally, or has someone who is able to care for them.

The royal mail lose over 3000 DLA renewal forms a year. (based on mail statistics)
