Annoyed by BT

Hi All, I recently switched from BT to Sky, for phone, broadband, and tv. This took place on Feb 9th. My broadband stopped during the day, so I connected up to Sky's router, and it was all working, great!

Today, Feb 16th, I received a letter from BT to tell me that my broadband will stop on Feb 11th, on the ball that BT! Anyway, the letter goes on to say that any charges will be debited within 15 days, and not to cancel the direct debit yet. So they are going to bill me up to Feb 11th, when my service stopped on the 9th?

I phoned their billing department this evening, and they said that it was Sky's fault because they did not use the MAC code, so my broadband carried on. I explained that I had obtained the code, but Sky said they did not need the code, because I was switching to a LLU service. I know it probably won't be a lot of money, but it's the principle of the thing. My line was not even connected to BT since Feb 9th, so I could not use BT broadband even if I had wanted to! Can they bill me for something that was not possible to recieve or use?

BT Retail are trying it on.
BT Openreach switched to over to Sky.
Looks like a bit of a communication breakdown.
If Sky did not provide BT with your MAC then they are liable for refunding you.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • Thanks for your reply, I did tell BT that if they bill me up to Feb 11, I will cancel my direct debit and will not pay.

Most if not all broadband contracts require 30 days notice.

I can't believe that you are getting uppity over 2 days payment. If you just cancel the DD then BT will pass the unpaid amount over to debt collectors.

My advice is pay up and shut up. Your choice though obviously if you feel there isn't enough stress in your life.
  • Thanks for that!
  • Usually you have to give 30 days notice, but do think BT are trying it on, my dealings with BT they are always useless!!

You and I are of a different school of thought on that matter, I'd simply cancel the DD and refuse to pay until I got a correct bill or pay part of it and make them work for the rest - simply leave the ball in their court if they want the money, it's no work for me to throw the debt collection agencies' letters in the bin - takes seconds :)

Mind you the 30 day thing could well be it. Personally if I were the OP I'd cancel the mandate now, as there's no knowing quite what will show up on the final bill, and it gives the opportunity to challenge it without risking any loss of service.

    .........ooops wrong thread
  • Update to this thread, forgot about it, sorry! I am glad I didn't cancel the direct debit to BT, they did indeed bill me to the correct date, and they also refunded me about £34 advance payments. :j:j:j
