At work we generally find that any of the schools where we carry out repairs refuse to let our staff on site unless they have been enhanced level CRB checks. Occasionally they will let our staff work in specified areas without the CRB but if they need to access a classroom, toilet area or walk through the playground then they have to request a chaperone from the school to escort them as set down in the local authority rules & regulations.

I'm afraid this just sums up how these things spiral out of control!
  • Is it in your friend's job description to check the police computer system to trace CRB checks and advise the subjects on progress?

it is actually his job to do the crb application clearance, yes. so no harm in telling me it's on it's way back to the school

Thank you for responding but I didn't ask whether it was his job to do the CRB application clearance. I asked, "Is it in your friend's job description to check the police computer system to trace CRB checks and advise the subjects on progress? "
If it is, then anyone who is in the process of having a CRB check carried out on them can contact the police to see how it is progressing. Is that right?
  • he didn't check the system to trace the check, he had my form to process, and when it was done, he text to say 'guess what I've just done?' don't see what the problem is, I know my crb is clear, so what's the harm in him telling me it's been done and sent back?

Perhaps he could check with his line manager that this is acceptable. (And it's got nothing to do with whether your CRB is clear.) Did he use police equipment to text you? If not, it doesn't sound like it was his job to inform you.
  • I have to agree with littlevoice on this.

Surely the people actually doing the crb checks should be sticking to the correct procedures EXACTLY, otherwise they are devaluing the checks.

I am not sure that being cleared by someone who actually knows you personally should be within the rules either.

Would they have let your circle of friends know if you failed the check ?

Is this play ofsted inspected? If so then they would expect CRB's to be done on all staff. I had a problem last year when our preschool had an inspection. The manager didn't take a copy of my CRB number and the Ofsted inspector said I would need a new CRB as I didn't keep a copy myself after moving house. I was treated like a newbie awaiting a CRB and I wasn't allowed to go into childrens toilets etc. So basically if it is to be ofsted inspected then yes they will want CRB's done on all staff. I sort of agree they are useless, look at the case of the preschool worker who had a clean CRB and abused kids on the premises. Good practice is what is needed in places to safeguard children and also the staff.

I asked him this morning if his manager knew he had text, and he did know, so obviously there was no harm done!
he still has to do his job and my form was on his list, he still has to do the thorough checks, not really as if he can pass it if someone was on the system, but thanks for all your input!

To above comment i am saying surely parents expect the staff to be crb checked as they are letting their children go off and play while there staff are on play frame watching on go cars. And even having the one to one contact with the child in harnessing them up
I have recently phoned up other local play centres like this and all staff up there are checked and are on the new check that gets updated weekly

Also the employer hasn't got a clue if the people working there have done something as they haven't taken the time to carry out the check

    You're welcome! :)

But seriously, I'm surprised that managers in the police service are so lax about such things.

Then again, I have had police press officers and others handing out information which identified me as a victim of crime - so perhaps it's not so surprising.
