Home changes after burglary

Hi All,

Unfortunately we were burgled a few weeks ago and the insurance assessor has been round yesterday. They have informed us that our front door and middle door leading onto the conservatory only have a secure locking system not 5 point multi locking system as the patio doors have so if we got broken into again then Churchill wouldn't pay out. Obviously we were not expecting this extra cost.

Is there any cheap way around this problem or are we going to have to pay about £600 per door? The burglars actually got in by throwing a brick through the double glazed patio door.

We also need an alarm supplying and fitting but having just had a quote for £750 we might end up buying a Yale one approx £200 and paying for it fitting separately.

Can anyone recommend a solution to our problem.

Thanks in advance

  • Locks are all that matter.

    Do as they say.

You have been warned by the insurance company & remember burglars quite often come back for 2nds on your new replacement stuff.

  • I would get some more quotes for alarm and wouldnt be paying more than £300 to have it supplied and fitted.

We were burgled a couple of years ago. We bought a Yale alarm off Ebay for £100 and had it fitted by an electrician for £60.
Also worth thinking about having a security light fitted. We had one fitted at the same time as the alarm and it was only an extra £80.

£600 per door may seem a lot but it will be a lot more when the burglars get back in and your insurers refuse to pay out.

Have you asked the insurance company WHY you need to have a 5 point locking system?
As far as I am concerned, i dont see why you should have to have this.

We certainly dont have a 5 point locking system to our front door and our insurance company dont have a problem with that. Double check and tell them to change the terms of your cover if needed

Normally insurers are happy with a BS kite-marked five lever mortice lock. Are you sure he wasn't just telling you that the locks you have are not up to that level?

As for alarms - I personally wouldnt touch a Yale alarm system with a barge pole either a wired version or hard wired.

Much better to go for a hard wired system http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/displayProduct.jsp?sku=SR04831&CMP=e-2072-00001000 such as this one, obviously with it being hard wired it means you will have to run wires in, its a real easy to use alarm.

For a wireless system i'd go for http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/ESKITPWES.html?source=froogle easy to setup and no wires apart from the one to the bell box

Millions of houses do not have a 5 point locking system on their doors and they can still get insurance.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Until they get burgled & are refused a payout or told they must change them if they want to have cover continue :o
