!7 year old daughter in f/t eduaction working more than 24 hours in the half term

Hi would be glad if anyone can help me with this,

My daughter is 17, year 13 at school, she has a part time job, Contracted to work 6 hours either sat or sun but they allways put her down for more,
Usually between 8 and 15 hours between the two days.

I still get ctc and cb for her and have heard about the 24 hour rule but this has never been an issue until now,

It's half term next week and she has found out today that as they are gonna be short staffed next week that she has been put down on the rota to work 30 hours as they know she doesn't have school,

I've told her she needs to call them and explain that not only does she have to get some studying done during that week it could also cause problems for me.

She won't call them as the manager is a bit of an ogre and she says that she prob wont believe her anyway.

She says she will just work it.

Seeing as its just for the week do you think I should let the tax office know as im worried about messing up my tax credits for the sake of 6 hours over just one week.

Also is the 24 hour rule from monday to friday or 7 days?

Any help greatly appreciated.

    she can work during half term with ni implications to you child benefit and tax credits. its only if she leaves full time education that they will stop.

    to be honest i dont know what the 24 hour rule is.
    i understand that the child has to be in full time education, and if they worked 24 every week, they obviously wouldnt have time to be educated too!
    the tax credits and child benefit are paid to you' they are your benefits in respect to having a child in full time education. what she earns is irrelevant to your entitlement.

    What 24 hour rule - do you think that is one that affects your tax credits or do you think this relates to employment law for young workers?

    Rules around minimum hours to be eligible for tax credits relates to the person who receives the tax credits, not the dependent.

  • I read on a thread here sometime last year that there was a rule regarding ctc and the amount of hours the young person being claimed for was allowed to work per week before it affected the ctc claim,

    I believe that it was 24 hours per week.

    thats a new one on me!

    i thought you had an entitlement as long as the child stays in full time education.
    i can understand there being a rule of how many hours can be worked term time, so as not to jeopardise the childs education. but cant see what difference it makes during school holidays.

    Edited to add that after some research it appears that the "24hour limit" rule applies only if the young person leaves full time education.

    My own child is in the same situation as your as in she works part time whilst studying .

    If your child is going to be working 30 hours next week then you DO NOT need to declare this to tco as it is in the half term hols. I have already checked this out myself.

    Out of curiousity , did you inform tco when your child started the job ? Some people say you HAVE to inform them and others say you DONT .

  • Thankyou no-oneknows me, I thought I was going a bit mad there, lol

    No I didn't inform them, I did a bit of research on here and came to the conclusion it was ok especially since initially it was only 6 hours on a weekend day,

    I am a bit worried now that maybe I should have but from what ive read I understood that what she earned is her money. over time they just put her down for more than the 6 hours, she doesn't know from one week to the next what hours she is working unless she actually goes in especially to look at the rota,

    She only found out today about next week as one of her schoolfriends also works there and had an after school shift (she texted my daughter her hours for next week) otherwise my daughter wouldn't have known untill she went in on sat.
  • Karen dont be worrying . As long as your child is still in full time education you will be ok.

    I havent told tco that my child is working but in saying that she only works 12 hours per week .

    the 24 hours is only if your child leaves education .
