Oh lovely! You have my sympathy - that's my mantra too, when the Creme Eggs are too tempting...

It's totally up to you, but I'd contact some local shops and tell them you are nervous about coming in to try on, as you feel slightly larger than you'd like to be - any shop worth going to will realise that that means: 'I don't want to know what size it is, I don't want you to tell me you're getting a larger size out for me to try, if you use the word 'larger/bigger/curvy' I WILL kill you with my eyes, I don't want any mention AT ALL of my size' etc.

I usually hate trying stuff on, but I can tell you - wedding dresses are magical. They are usually structured, and boned and corsetted, and they just make you look smaller! I am going to try on two styles I LOVE in a really posh shop in London (I have this vision of being surrounded by 22 year old twigs in Prada shifts, who tut at my bingo wings, but I'm doing it anyway), so I emailed them and told them my size and said I was worried the samples would be too small - they were lovely and reassuring and said that was totally fine and they were looking forward to seeing me!

If it's honestly going to make you feel bad - then don't do it.

One other silly thing that might make you feel better - have a look at sell my wedding dress.com (might have to Google that for the exact URL), and search by size. I keep looking on there for pics of people actually wearing their own dresses which they are then selling - the number of times I have been surprised that a woman who looks about a size 14 in a dress says it's a size 22 or above, I can't tell you! It's silly, but actually really reassuring! Obv listings where they put the website pic aren't much help in this regard...

Anyway, big hug, and let us know what you decide. xxx
:grin:If at first you don't succeed, then sky-diving isn't for you
  • It's entirely up to you, but I do echo what everyone else said about getting a second opinion from someone you trust not to blab about it to other people, if only so you're sure it's right for you.

I'm not dress hunting yet but when I do it'll hopefully be me, my mum, one or both of my sisters, my best mate and/or my OH's sister (not everyone's first choice I'll admit but we're quite close and I do trust her enough for something like this).

Married my best friend 1st November 2014
Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")
Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")
  • I tried on and looked at dresses myself. But I did email pictures of ones I liked the look of to my bridesmaids and mothers for their comments. I took my mum and future MIL when I tried on the dress I had finally decided was best.

  • Well basically i have decided that i want to go and try on dresses by myself. I don't get married until next June, but obviously want to start looking and trying on.

Just wondered if anyone else has felt this way, or i am just being selfish for not letting anyone else come with me.

Both sets of parents are contributing quite a bit towards this wedding.

Main reason for wanting to this alone is so i can surprise everyone, and the fact that if i invited one person then i would have to invite the other etc.

I'd definitely take someone with you (pref your mum as she would love to be included I'm sure). You may shop for regular clothes on your own but a wedding dress is a whole different ball game!
Apparently I was a fairly quick decision maker - after 1 and a half hours I'd narrowed my choice down to four dresses. Without my mum and a friend I'm not sure if I'd have ever left the shop!
I knew I loved my dress but when you're forking out all that money for it, doubts creep in and having someone there just to tell you that the dress is perfect really helps.
Plus the shop I brought it from did this amazing 'unveiling' moment that makes me smile even when I think of it now (I want to go back!!). It's not much of an entrance when the only person to greet you is the shop assistant!!
You normally have to book at most places so you could browse on your own and then make an appointment? They can write down the dress names for you and bring them out when you do try them on. Happy hunting! Bx
  • I took my friends, with the intention of taking my Mum on my second trip. However I fell in love with a dress on the first day, so didn't want to try any more on with my mum - she's gutted. I also ordered it there & then to give enough time to get it ordered, so I couldn't invite her to come with me when I ordered it. However, I've invited her to the fitting. I did need a lot of reassurance from my friends for every dress - except this one. When you know, you know!

It might take a few trips, go to the first on your own, or all on your own. Take someone to the fitting if you feel like it. I am a bit gutted that people will know what my dress looks like so I can't suprise everyone!
