I didn't claim for a while, as I was made redundant, therefore would have been ineligible anyway. I wanted to be able to choose my timing, i.e no point in me signing up for JSA and being on the system, signing on etc when I could not claim

Why would being made redundanct make you ineligible to sign on? I signed on for 6 months after being made redundant in 2009.
    :p

One look at that, plus some of the totally unemployable characters hanging around outside would put many decent people off stepping inside if they could find any alternative.

Care to elaborate on this curious statement?

I never claimed JSA when i was not working which was for around 5 months, indeed i only went to the job center once, i found it completely depressing watching the type of people who went in,expecting a miracle from the JC staff

What 'type' of people depressed you looking for a job?

sorry to hijack this thread however I hope I have mis understood something.

My partner quit his job in June of last year(he quit to allow us to move closer to my work place) and got his P45. He's still not working out of choice as he living off this savings so he's never signed on because he doesn't need the JSA money.

Does this mean when he starts working again in about 1 months time he'll get a NI bill?

sorry if i have completely missed the point

One is not obliged to sign on if out of work, however, one is obliged to keep HMRC informed of one's status for tax reasons and NI is considered a tax by these bods.

ie - he probably paid tax in his employment April - July, but given that he probably hasn't earned over his personal tax free allowance this money should then be refunded by HMRC...

Unless this was sorted in full by his new employer when he started his new job in Feb 10?

Why would an employer sort out the personal tax affairs of an individual?

    Indeed, how could they?

Actually appears you are right, someone on phone at JC+ told me that was affected by "savings", clearly I misunderstood or they told me wrong!

JSA entitlement is affected by savings if you have to claim income based JSA. The first six months of a claim are contribution based - provided that you have sufficient NI contributions in previous two tax years.

By getting P45 from the job he finished in July which would show the tax paid and their payroll system after inputing this would recognise that OP's other half is tax due back for example????

The employer wouldn't sort out anything.. it gets sorted itself on the system as long as you have all the necessary paperwork.

PS: I do payroll so I know. Most payroll systems do recognise this.

OP needs to check other halfs P60 for that year.

Well where to start chavs with baseball caps waiting outisde with their dogs, inside people arguing with the Advisor because they cant speak English, yet they expect the Advisor to understand them, people eating sandwiches, drinking while using the Phones thus leaving crumbs everywhere, and spreading germs, trying to use the JobPoint but finding it difficulkt because the guy standing next to me stinks of BO.

The Job Center is really a depressing place to me, by the way its nopt only me who notices this, friends and colleagues who have been to the Job Center say similar things!!!
