P45 Lost?? Never claimed JSA when unemployed???

Hi Everyone,

My boyfriend was made redundent in December and has since started a new job. He never recieved his P45 from his previous employer and asked called them to ask for it.
He got paid end of Jan but had to pay emergency tax and its coming up to end of Feb and he still hasn't received even though his previous employer keeps saying they have sent it.

What should he do and can he claim the extra tax back that he paid in Jan??

My boyfriend was also unemployed in 2009 for about months, during this time he never signed on or claimed any benefits. We managed on my wages and help from his family and his savings. He has recently recieved a letter from Inland Revenue for a bill of £727 for unpaid National Insurance. Does he have to pay this even thoguh he never signed on???

If he started his new job with out a P45 he should fill in a P46 which his new employer will provide. Im surprised he has not done this already.
His tax will be sorted out in his wage/salary.

If he ever needs benefits in the two years following his unpaid NI he will be uable able to claim any.

It may also affect his state pension but this is unlikely as nowadays you only need 30 years contribution to get that.

So I dont think you actually have to pay the outstanding NI.

He really should have signed on when he was unemployed. His NI would have been credited as well as having some money to live on. What on earth made him not sign on.

Nothing personal to you OP but it astounds me that so many people have no idea of the basics of Tax and NI
    criteria.

How many Months and when was he unemployed during 2009? The revenue are only ever told what an employee has paid over the Year, not Monthly so I can't understand what the unpaid NI bill is unless unemployed for a whole Tax Year?

He was unemployed from Jul 09 to Feb 10. Then for about 2 weeks in dec 10.

He didn't sign on because of his pride, sounds silly but he has never been out of work in his life and this is just the way he felt.

Unfortunately his pride has cost him dearly. I can think of a better word than 'silly'

He still should have signed on at the JCP to get his NI credit. Aswell as the staff helping to look for work.

If he was unemployed for such a long period of time in 2009, are you sure he is not owed any tax though??

ie - he probably paid tax in his employment April - July, but given that he probably hasn't earned over his personal tax free allowance this money should then be refunded by HMRC...

Unless this was sorted in full by his new employer when he started his new job in Feb 10?

When you look at this P60 from 2009-2010, how much does it say he got paid, total tax deduction and total NI deduction?

I suspect there are far more unemployed people than you may think who, for one reason or another, do not claim JSA.

I am lucky to live in a prosperous city with low unemployment. The Job Centre is far and away the scruffiest and most depressing building in what is otherwise a nice road. One look at that, plus some of the totally unemployable characters hanging around outside would put many decent people off stepping inside if they could find any alternative.

Perhaps that is what the Government wants?

I didn't claim for a while, as I was made redundant, therefore would have been ineligible anyway. I wanted to be able to choose my timing, i.e no point in me signing up for JSA and being on the system, signing on etc when I could not claim

sorry to hijack this thread however I hope I have mis understood something.

My partner quit his job in June of last year(he quit to allow us to move closer to my work place) and got his P45. He's still not working out of choice as he living off this savings so he's never signed on because he doesn't need the JSA money.

Does this mean when he starts working again in about 1 months time he'll get a NI bill?

sorry if i have completely missed the point

I never claimed JSA when i was not working which was for around 5 months, indeed i only went to the job center once, i found it completely depressing watching the type of people who went in,expecting a miracle from the JC staff
