Hello can anyone recommend any sites to get updated versions of old spectrum games. I have just got a macbook pro so any that work on this platform is great. Failing that I have a laptop with XP. I'm particularly interested in Rainbow Islands ans Sabre Wulf.

abandonware is what those old games are called. Google that and I am sure you will find what you are looking for.0

I would avoid downloading them. It's much better to just keep the fond memories you have of these games rather than going back and ruining those memories as I did. Googling spectrum games download will give you results though. There's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.0 -
I encourage people to seek out old games - it is the only way we will kill the myth that playability was so much better in the 8-bit days.
It really, really wasn't.
Google "Spectrum Emulator" (or Commodore, Dragon, Acorn, whatever) and consign all those false memories to the wobbly rampack of history.I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.0 -

Surely the fact that people are still playing those old 8 bit games almost 30 years later disprove that theory? Just saying
Have a look at worldofspectrum.org all of the old games that have been given permission for distribution can be found there.
If you want reworks then take a look over at http://retrospec.sgn.net0 -

I loved playing Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy again. I have an arcade emulator and play lots of old arcade games from the 80's although Defender is a bit hard with a keyboard.0 -
Sorry white christmas can't agree with you on 80's games being naff. Commodore 64, still playing them, still love em such as activision tennis, leaderboard golf and horrible horace. The 80s were the halcyon days for bedroom gaming!!!!0

Another quick and easy way to rekindle old memories is to look the games up on YouTube as most are on there. Okay you can't play them but you can watch them being played and get a warm feeling inside about how great games such as Dizzy were.0
