I'd say you were about right with you original estimate of £100. Infact I'd say that was an absolute maximum bearing in mind its not fruit cake and your having buttercream not marzipan and sugarpaste! I'm doing my own cake, 4 tiers, all fruit and its cost me about £160 for all the ingredients, including the stuff to make the sugar flowers and some tools and equipment that I needed to add to my collection! If you're paying £300 you might as well pay a bit more and have a fully decorated one!

Last one I did the ingredients were just over £200 (fully decorated; including the boards and boxes; not including the stand and the extra cutters I had to buy and all the ingredients very organic/free range where possible on request of the bride)

But it was a 3 tier fruit cake (all tiers), plus two extra sponges for the kitchen (sponges were also iced) - so five cakes in total

£300 for one fruit and two sponge undecorated is way way over what it should be if you are being charged for the ingredients. I would have thought £125 at the most; sponge is very cheap to make.

I don't mean to be rude but £80 for ingredients, where do they buy them from ?

Think i might go in to cake making, I make 8" cakes at xmas for family and friends with icing etc and if they cost that sort of money I would be bankrupt as I made 6 last year !

Hi, I got married on Sunday. Here is my cake!

I found a woman who advertised in the local paper (London Ealing). I went to see her and tried her samples. She told me her prices are £300 for a 4 tier cake which feeds 200 people. She also told me she was trying out ebay and had a starting bid of £200. So I bid - and no one else did and I got the cake for £200!

She told me to pick any design I liked so I found a photo from the Little Venice Cake Company which she said she would copy:

I also had 3 tiers of sponge & 2 layers of butter cream inside each tier. It was delicious and all for £200 plus £50 for delivery & setup!

So shop around if you can, look in the local paper and definitely look at Ebay!

I considered making the cake myself but after investigating the cost of buying cake tins to bake them in, boxes to transport etc it didn't seem worthwhile.
