My cake is £250 and its 5 tier, 14'' fruit, 12'' sponge, 10'' death by chocolate, 8'' raspberry champage, and 6'' marble cake. Fully iced and include ribbons and the vows writing around the middle 3 tiers.
Its being made by a lady who does it for a living. She has a shop and the overheads associated with that, so i would say that £300 for your cake is definately not cost price.:jProud mummy to a beautiful baby girl born 22/12/11 :j0 -
yes you are being over charged....im a cake maker (from home) and havent yet once made a cake that has cost £300....and ive done 4 tiered ones containing TWO fruitcakes inside (which are dearer than sponge)
but as other have mentioned if they have a premises etc they need to cover costs and may have to pay wages if others work for them.
and dont compare with supermarket cakes....they are mass produced, very 'slopily' decorated and nowhere near as 'deep' as home-made ones.
just something to keep in mind x:dance:

Goodness me...thats some cake....and sounds delicious!....any chance of sending out a few slices afterwards?........frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!
2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend0 -
sammy you got a good deal there for that cake
Mine are similar costs (and lower) and my business advisor said i was working for under £1 an hour!!
some people need to take into consideration how much time goes into a cake.......try making one yourself and youll see what i mean!! LOL
the actual ingredients are the cheap bit...its the icing, marzipan etc that costs a fortune!

Im the ultimate little miss indecisive, it took me ages to narrow down the choice of 30+ flavours to just the 5 (biggest cake she'll do!!)
I dont know which im going to eat, a piece of each i think, especially the raspberry champagne, its got a layer of fresh rasperries in the middle. Yum yum.I think i'll have to have someone loosen my dress a bit by that stage!

I had a 3 tier fruit cake iced and decorated with (not edible) diamantes and sugarpaste roses on top. We were charged £30 for the ingredients at cost price. she is not a cake maker who is in business does it more as a hobby but that is what she said it cost to buy the ingredients and the cake boards.0

Ours was 2-tier, 12" fruit, 8" lemon sponge, royal iced & simply decorated. It cost us £205 including delivery to the venue.
Personally I think £300 is waaaay too much if that is supposed to be "cost". However, I think you may be caught between a rock & a hard place if you think its too much but your friend has already given the go-ahead, but if she is paying and is happy with the cost, then maybe it's not your worry?0 -

OMG that sounds likt the nicest cake ever!!! My Mums doing cake classes at the mo and wants to make mine, she better get up to scratch soon cause now Ive seen this.....0 -
My goodness OP! £300? Cost?!! As everyone else is saying 'no waaaaaay'! My Mum has made my bottom two tiers (10" and 8") and spent only about £30 on decent ingredients. Soaking brandy came from 'stock'. Even with the intention to hire the cake tins at £6 a time, it's going to cost nowhere near £300! Cake shop lady is doing the decorating and making tiers 3 and 4- charging £100.0

I just had my first cake quote today - 3 tiers each with a different flavour, decorated to my own design £180. I thought this was fab - its from a proper cake shop and the cakes all look really yummy. I reckon £300 is very expensive to be cost price. If my quote had come back more than £200 I think I'd be making my own!0
