Here is a picture of a worcester combi boiler 24i. Is anyone familiar with this boiler, have one or has had one and had a problem like im going to describe?

Ok, as you see in the picture a combi boiler.

Bottom right, the pressure clock, next to that the timer swtich with the on /off and timer button. next to that on the left is the heat control switch, you turn in for the hotness of the water.

Ok, the problem.

There is a switch on the timer, on, off and time setting (like a clock you can set it to go on and off at a certain time) We use the switch to turn the appliance on and off, we never use the timer as we only have heating either on all day or off.

ok, to swtich the combi on the switch is set to the bottom, on doing this the appliance fan goes on, this is a noice hard to describe but the fan comes on, after a few seconds the appliance ignites, you can hear this noise like a 'whoosh' gas igniting kind of noise. Then obviously the radiators get hot and we have hot water.

We have noticed that several times a week, that some times we feel a little cold and feel the radiators and they are cold, the appliance has gone off, so i go upstairs to the boiler and the fan is still going but obviously not working the, lets call it the ignitor as i do not know technical names. So now i can run the hot tap and only cold water comes out, the hot is now not working. The only way to get things back to normal is by turning the boiler off, waiting 5 minutes until the fan dies then return it back to on, and again the fan starts, then a few seconds later the appliance ignites and again we have hot water and the cenral heating is working.

This is an intermittent problem, it happens about 2 or 3 times a week, some days its ok, heating on all day and no probes, but another day the heating can be on from 9am in a morning then sometime on the evening the rooms get cold and we find the heating if off.

Cheers.

Are you sure its not the pump you can hear, this will go on after the unit is switched off until it cools enough.

it maybe the pump, but there is a fan in the unit, that not the problem, the problem is why is the unit shutting off and not restarting. I should not have to turn the boiler off and leave for 5 minutes until i turn it back on to work.

I am posting from a place that is blocking the picture so this may or may not be relevant.

We had a Worcester cdi24 installed in our previous flat in 2002 and had endless problems with it tripping out, in that case the warning light would flash to indicate the fault. You haven't mentioned if that happens, so it may not be the case!

We had the main PCB changed about 3 times before one Worcester engineer investigated further and found that the ignition sensor wasn't set correctly. The boiler was lighting but the sensor didn't notice that it was, so it was then tripping out and cutting the gas supply. He replaced and changed the position of the sensor and all was well from then on.

ours trips occasionally, maybe 3 or 4 times a year BG say its the age of the boiler and scale that does that, that no probs at the moment as we just push the nipple down if that happens.

so i guess you have had the same probs, ill mention the ignition sencor to the engineer when we call him out.

any futher help from anyone please, incase thats not the fault.

Ours was tripping out more often than 3 or 4 times a year, each time it got to 3 or 4 times a month we called Worcester out - as we bought it new we took their service contract and certainly got our money's worth.

I am assuming yours is a different boiler to ours, though still a Worcester, so it may be the cause.

I have the exact same boiler in my flat. Main PCB has been changed at least twice, and another part was changed the year before last but I don't know what as I was out at the time. However there is an issue with the air pressure switch on these boilers, the old type I think is black and the newer white.

Also on the top left there is a reset switch, that can go intermittent so pull it out a few times to clean the contacts.

"next to that on the left is the heat control switch, you turn in for the hotness of the water."

FYI. As far as I can establish that only controls the heating water temperature not the tap hot water.

I would also assume it is the pump you can hear.

Has it ever failed when used just for HW, or just when the heating is on?
