Not saying you do, but many people do!

  • Oh that pic did make me smile!! (even though the actual subject isn't funny!!) I always pick up my dog's poo and bag it and keep the bag till i get to a bin, and I usually have the dog (who is still a pup so very excitable) and my 2 yr old in the pushchair so it can sometimes be tricky to do lol!! (in all fairness we do have plenty of bins where i live but that's probably because we have lots of lovely fields and walkways so a hotspot for dog walking) but we still find bags of dog mess hanging from trees and bushes and left on the side of the path etc. I cannot understand why people do this, its no better than the people who don't bother to pick it up at all (and you'd be surprised how many people still don't bother!!), its one of my pet hates, why have a dog if your not prepared to pick up the mess????

OMG, surely that's not all poo:eek:

Sorry, that's taking the proverbial. When I said some people leave it for on the way back I meant a bag here and there, nothing like that. That is outrageous. Who do people think is going to come and clear that mess up?

Is that you in the pic, or someone about to hang up their poo?

Call the environmental health people, this has to be stopped.

    I've been Money Tipped!
We arranged a sponsered walk last year, over a private estate, and the caveat of the landowner was that it was fine so long as NOONE used poobags....they take ages and cost money to pick up. I walk everyday over our land with our dogs and don't usually pick up if its away from the garden, the yards and the gates.....and its not revolting here....it does what the poo of all the other animals that use our land does..it decomposes and disappears (although I do pick it up if I find it easily and while picking up after the horses, whose production volume is very different and actually does cause an issue with parasites.). Last few years I walked TEN dogs everyday in a smaller field and rarely saw an old poo. we lived on a very rural road which we and very occsionally our neighbours visiting firend walked dogs and no one picked up if on the verge (but we usually did on the road). It just wasn't an issue...and there was no bin or home for literally miles and miles. Poo and leave is vastly preferable to poo, bag and leave. Incomparably so. Its not my favourite chore to bag my own dogs poo and carry it, but I do when appropriate, its certainly not a nice job carrying home other people's dogs bags!

BUT, this is in a rural area. In a village, near a village or in an urban area IMO, or a ''destination walking/recreation place'' even on large open spaces, it should bagged and removed. without excuse. You forget how importnant this is till you visit somewhere where its not obligatory and vitually do hopscotch through the streets avoiding it.

Picking it and leaving it to get later is an interesting one....I usually take others I find....because I presume its left there. I usually try and find round routes to walk too. I'd pick and leave if we were sitting down or playing near the area, but not if I were walking away from the area....I'd be too worried someone would feel I'd left it.

Why shouldn't my dog foul in the green spaces and countryside?

Dog mess can spread of some very nasty infections and diseases and a pile of dog poo can contain one million microscopic Toxocara Eggs. Toxocaris is highly infectious, especially to children. Typical Toxocaris symptoms include dizziness and nausea, asthma and epileptic seizures. More seriously, it can lead to serious eye damage, even permanent blindness.
Dog mess, especially from unwormed dogs, also harbours parasites that can harm farm animals especially cows and sheep. If your dog is caught short, please clear up its mess and dispose of it in a dog bin. If there isn't a bin near by, please don't leave it behind on the path or hang it on a tree in a bag. Instead, dispose of it safely at home by double wrapping it and putting it in your standard household refuse.
The countryside is used by children, cyclists, wheelchair and pushchair users throughout the year - and everyone has the right to enjoy the countryside. No one, even dog owners, really wants dog poo smeared over their shoes, hands or wheels do they

Round here we've got poo bins all over the place and very few poo bag tree baubles... round by my mums where I was walking the other day (almost got attacked but that's another story)... it looks like Christmas tree decorations gone wrong.

Glad to see that it is not only me thinking the hangng poo bags are just something tottaly wrong....

If someone considers themselves responsible enough pet owner to pick up - they should be responsible enough to deposit that bag with content in a suitable place not just leave it lying/hanging around....
  • There is a problem with the sheer volume of dog poo now even in wild places - I think the National Trust had a campaign to get people to bag and bin in the Lake District as it is altering the pH of the soil and thus affecting the flora.

Getting the right sort of bag makes a difference - I'm using BioBags when out and about after trying out a variety. I also use a Muksak which is great for carrying the bags home/until I come to a bin. Very effective at sealing in the stink. There's another type called a Dicky Bag which is a more fashionable item but more expensive and I've not tried it.

You can also buy special cat and dog poo worm composters.

(I think the photo might be from a campaign called "There's no such thing as a dog poo fairy")

The following is taken from the National trusts own website:

    'Fouling
Never leave poo where people walk, play or picnic. We ask that if your dog fouls, particularly in car parks and on paths, you pick up and remove the mess. Flick it into rough grass or woodland, or take it away with you and dispose of it at home. There may be dedicated bins to put it in at heavily used sites.'

As you can see, they clearly advocate flicking it into rough grass or woodland as an effective way of disposing of it.
