Orange PAYG balance not decreasing...

... not that I'm complaining! I'm just wondering why though.
I've had Orange PAYG for over five years now and am still on an old tariff, I think - the one where you get to choose your own off-peak hours. I did debate changing it to one of the new ones but on balance I didn't think I'd be any better off.
I've got £1.18 on my phone and have been conscious that the balance is low and I must top it up soon. However, whenever I've sent a text and checked the balance, it's stayed the same. I must have sent at least five texts in the past week and no money has been taken off. I have made a couple of short calls and the balance has decreased accordingly.
Last time I topped up this phone was in the summer.
I don't really want to call Orange and ask them what's what: a) I have to pay for the privilege and b) I'm sure they'll put a stop to it.
Has anyone got any idea why my texts are free??

You didn't get a textsaver when you got your phone did you? This gives you 5 free texts a day but is no longer available.
I am also not being charged for texts, except 5 digit numbers and am just keeping quiet, suggest you do the same.0 -
I did get one when I got my phone, but that was in 2004 and only lasted for a year or something like that
I thought maybe they'd switched me to free text top-up or whatever it's called, but I haven't topped up for yonks.
Weird...

Mine was the year one also, they texted me last june to let me know it was finishing but it hasn't and i'm not going to tell them otherwise, am just taking it as a bonus for a long as it lasts. Like you I have not topped up for ages, not since I got the £5 credit when the textsaver was applied in june 2005 as I don't use my phone that much.0
