Fly Thomas Cook

I'm trying to book flights through this website and it's trying to charge me £16 to pay with a debit card. I'm completely at a loss - is this a new thing? I know there's a 2.5% credit card booking fee.

Is this a mistake or has anyone else experienced this?

  • I don't know for sure but I think a couple of airlines now charge for payments made by debit cards - I think the only cards not to incur a charge are electron cards.

I also think this is a subject that the OFT is looking into - I seem to remember Martin talking about it on radio 4 last week.

Some airlines changed this and now offer "fee free" bookings with pre-paid Mastercards (e.g. FairFX, etc)

OP: [STRIKE]Have a search on Google and see what cards are accepted by them fee free (Usually very well documented by the traveling public)[/STRIKE] See below :T

    Their website tells us...
There is a card fee applied to the booking when using any card to make a booking, except for Solo, Electron and Mastercard Pre-Paid card. The charge applicable is £4.00 / €6.00 (Credit Card) £3.00 / €5.00 (Debit Card) per passenger per flight.
If you are using a debit card, then I'm not sure how they can charge £16.00.

Should be a multiple of £3 with a debit card.

Even so, £3 per person per flight is a bit steep.

Where did you get the 2.5% credit card booking fee from?

I assume 2ppl return gives the £16, being charged as credit not debit card? Nobody has a Solo, Electron or prepaid mastercard, which is why they are free - so they can give the illusion of choice about the CC charges!
  • I have an electron and a prepaid mastercard. They takes 2 mins (and 3 days) to get.

Last time I booked with Thomas Cook (I do admit it was many moon ago), there was a 2.5% CC booking fee.

I'm going to call their customer services and see why I've been charged £16 instead of £12. Still, £12 is a shock.

None of the banks I use have Visa Electron options so I guess I'll need to find one so I can get around this in the future.

Seems like a complete con. TC are getting like Ryanair!

Can I ask where you have them from? I was told by my bank this morning that nobody does them nowadays!
