Ryanair flight in euros, can I pay with sterling card?

Hi All

I have just received my Fairfx Anywhere card and have loaded it with £100 (sterling). I need to book a single flight from Dublin. On the Ryanair website the cost comes up in euros. Please can you confirm if I can use this card or if there is anyway that I can change the cost of the flight to sterling.

What is the cheapest way to book this flight? I know I must pay the 1.5% fee but don't want to be slapped with currency charges.

Thanks, for your time - I can't find this answer anywhere!!

  • You can use this card with Ryanair, they will convert the price to sterling. For a slightly better exchange rate, on the payment page where it says " (i) Total amount (Including Administration Fee) (GBP ££.££) More Information ............ EUR €€.€€ " click on more information and uncheck the tick box. Then you will pay in euros and the bank will do the exchange rate. FairFX will charge a small fee in case of currency fluctuations but the price will correct itself after a few days.
  • They will load the price by £10

You only get the option to pay in euros if the flight is starting from a foreign airport.
  • I don't know about Ryan Air because I have never flown internationally or to Dublin with them. Fly frequently from Turkey to UK with Thomas Cook and although flight is shown in euro's (because coming from Turkey), there is an option to change currency when you pay.

I would have thought Ryanair would be the same, otherwise, not cost effective!!!!

There is a technique described on this site where you open two windows, start a transaction in one, then close it and the currency will be converted to the one of your choice. Someone will be able to point you in the right direction soon probably.

    As follows.

Open two tabs. In tab one, go to ryanair.com and search for a Eurozone -> UK flight. Search, but wait at the next page (listing available flights on available days).

In tab two, go to ryanair.com and search for any UK originating flight.

Go back to tab one, and click on the flight you want and click through to the next page. The flight will have been converted at Ryanair's rate to GBP. Check with your card provider's terms to see if this is better than what it would cost you to use your card in Euro.
  • Has anyone got any hard info about how much FairFX, Neteller and Escape, (and Caxton ?) charge for paying in Euros?

I would recommend that it is probably always cheaper to use a Sterling Card of any description and pay Euros with it than let Ryanair convert Euros to GBP at their horrendous exchange rates.

But my experience is limited to Neteller where I believe I have saved around 6% when I have bothered to check it. Which leads me to suggest that Neteller don't charge any significant FOREX fee other than perhaps the standard Mastercard network fee for FOREX which is I think now 2.75%. If I am right then it suggests that Ryanair and their merchant bank must charge around 9% in order that I should have discovered a net 6% difference on occasion

Consequently I would always click on the more information link mentioned by spondon30 and remove that tick from the box.

I paid for a flight yesterday (well three flights). Total cost £18 (I clicked the box to pay in GBP, not Ryanair's rate which was something like 23.00Euro), amount charged to my Euro currency FairFX card was 20.43 Euro. So I don't think I was charged any extra.

Return flights were Euro 52.17, booked separately, and that amount charged to my FairFX card. Again no other fees.
