My dad has been making these for years n years, he uses the small square tinfoil packs that the cats food comes in, pour in the fat/lard, leaving to cool slightly then adding bird seed/nuts etc and leaving to go hard. They are just like suet cakes that you can buy in Wilkinsons/poundshops etc. Failing that, you could always purchase some 'fat balls' from Home Bargains/B&M's - they were £1.49 for a pack of 12, already in a net and easy to hang although they do pong a bit lol :P x

It's best to take the fatballs out of the net they come in and hang them up some other way - I volunteer at a wildlife rescue centre and we've had birds and squirrels that have lost toes and had other injuries as they've got tangled up in the nylon mesh and couldn't get free.

  • Hi all,

This is my first posting! :j

I just wanted to add some important information regarding fat balls and bird feeding especially in the Spring and Summer months which I have found on the RSPB website:

Only feed selected foods at this time of year. Good hygiene is vital, or feeding may do more harm than good.

Black sunflower seeds, pinhead oatmeal, soaked sultanas, raisins and currants, mild grated cheese, mealworms, waxworms, mixes for insectivorous birds, good seed mixtures without loose peanuts.

Avoid using peanuts, fat and bread at this time, since these can be harmful if adult birds feed them to their nestlings. If you feel you must put out peanuts, only do so in suitable mesh feeders that will not allow sizeable pieces of peanuts to be removed and provide a choking risk.
Home-made fatballs can go soft and rancid in warm summer weather, and should be avoided. Commercially produced fat bars are suitable for summer feeding but discard any remains after three weeks.

If the food offered on your bird table isn't suitable for the young chicks, it can do more harm than good, and can even be lethal to the chicks as they can choke on the food. Therefore, never put out loose peanuts, dry hard foods, large chunks of bread, or fats during the spring or summer months.
