How can heating by electricity be cheaper than heating by gas? Electric heating is by far the most expensive option.
I have been considering changing from LPG to electric also, with regards to cost I presently pay 44ppl for LPG, this gives a price of around 6.2p kWh, I have electric with EDF at (from memory) 7.35p kWh. I currently have an old Ideal floor boiler which is reported as 75% efficient (when new) this puts the LPG at 8.26p kWh.
If I were to put an electric boiler in which the manufacturer is quoting 99.8% efficiency I would be paying 7.36p kWh.
I know GSHP would be much better but this boiler only costs around £700, plus electric installation and just locates itself in the existing pipework.
Not the ideal solution but by far the cheapest installation, if LPG goes up any more, which i'm sure it will this has to be a good alternative.
I currently use around 19000 kWh per year in LPG, factoring in the boiler efficiency this equates to around 14250 kWh of electricity, giving me a saving of around £130 a year at present LPG cost.
I need to replace the boiler anyway, GSHP would be lovely but will take a lot longer to claim back the installation costs.

Are you sure your electricity is only 7.35p per kWH? That sounds more like an E7 rate-typical price is 10p per kWh.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Just had a look, sorry that was last deal price, I now have 7.73p kWh at all times, figures corrected would save me £77 per year over current LPG, so now looking at 10 years to break even.
GSHP I guess would cost me 8-10K and working on a worst COP of 2.5 this would save me around £700 per year, so around 14 years to break even.
Unfortunately I have a single loop radiator system and i've been told due to the GSHP lower temp I would have to renew the plumbing & rads, probably another 1k or so.
