We have had the new system in our branches for a couple of weeks now, it certainly does slow things down, and it seems the customers are not too happy!

We were told it will be going to chip and PIN in July. I was asked if I needed a receipt, and said "yes, of course", so one was duly provided.

I remember working for the Halifax back in the seventies when they introduced a new counter accounting system. It was a nightmare, one of my first customers turned out to be someone using a stolen passbook. I was so busy getting the documentation right I couldn't have recognised him to save my life.

It does seem a strange time to bring in the new system. Common sense would suggest that getting the card+PIN bit running before switching the counter system. This would then alleviate the problem of customers with cards having to get used to filling in slips.

It is not a new system, Halifax are adopting the same system Lloyds TSB have used for the past decade or so for usage with their customers. Chip & PIN was not compatible with the current Halifax Building Society counter system that is has had for the past 20 years.

LBG is running two systems at extra costs, it has to save money and look to improve, you will find that in the next 12 - 18mths huge improvements in the counter system at Lloyds Banking Group. It simply cannot maintain umpteen computer packages across its group. People will never be happy no matter what a bank seems to do these days.

Thats just simply not true. I pointed out how satisfied I was with the cooperative bank in the first post, their system seems much better thank the system I was exposed to in the Halifax today, but no I will never be satisfied with a bank that changes things that I find to be more difficult
  • mmm my local branch will give me a receipt automatically without question
New system i guess is slower but sometimes faster when card not in possession or immediate deposit out of use in some cases

I was in a Halifax branch last week as part of an integration team and found it quite surprising just how little has been moved over to the Halifax so far. The fact that they haven't done chip+pin at the same time or held off altogether until the summer, I couldn't believe. The staff there were fairly comfortable with the new counter system but at the minute they only have about 5% of it's potential available to them - they can only use it to deposit and withdraw.

I did hear a few complaints about filling in slips, mainly from older customers however, the staff did say their customers are too used to being spoon fed and I found it strange that for something as important as paying in and withdrawing money, there never used to be a paper copy involved.

In the long run, this integration will no doubt be of benefit to both staff and customers. They are still using their old systems for all enquiries and from what I saw it's very messy and simply outdated. The big challenge will be when the rest of the Lloyds TSB 'back office' systems arrive..that's when you'll start to see real queues!
