I'd say there is no point hoarding - I've bulbs that are still going strong after five years of use.
In our old house we replaced all the bulbs when we moved in and had to start replacing them again just before we moved out 7 years later. So 6-8 years seems about right for their lifetime. Some components age, even without use, so you may not gain anything by hoarding.

Many thanks for all your replys. I was out today and got some from Morrisons and Tesco (10p to 20p). So far so good. Still havn't found small candle bulbs but think it must be due to a minimum size needed to fit everything in.
I am happy with the colour and brightness of the lights too. The one thing is having to pick the so called "equivalent" power rating about 20W greater than what you had before to make it as bright.
