3G phone for T-mobile as a modem

Anyone know a cheap 3G phone I could use to stick a T-Mobile payt sim in & use it as a modem on my laptop. I know this is against t-mobile's T&C's, but I beleive it's based on usage, & if you used it for occasional browsing without getting greedy you'd most likely get away with it (I know people who do it using GPRS).

Nokia 7600's go quite cheaply on ebay. Mine works well as a 3g modem using a cable or bluetooth connection.

Will it work with T-Mobile as a 3G modem, if so does it require a cable or code unlock? Where would I get settings/drivers? Had a look on google with no luck.

When new it comes with a cable and cd with modem drivers. You can download the drivers from the Nokia website and the cables are plentiful on ebay. Code unlock is fine.

    I used it on T-Mobile - max £1 a day!

Sounds great! exactly what I'm after. What sort of download speeds do you get (33K GPRS on my XDA mini is painful!) & what amount of data have you managed to get away with? I tend to use around 10Meg a day (whoops let the cat out of the bag there!).

  • AFAIK the 7600 isn't a proper 3G phone as I had one on the 3network and I was told that I couldnt use it to access the services needing full 3G.

I'm no expert so perhaps some one else can comment further.

I don't know about download speeds as I only used it for a short time mainly for web browsing. I now use my Nokia N73 on Web & Walk so don't need to lug the laptop around.

  • My sister's got a 7600, so I'll ask her if I can borrow it to give it a try. If it works I'll get one off ebay. Funny thing is I sold a few of these on ebay a couple of years ago when amazon were doing them for £39.99 (shameful I know, but there were MSE members buying over 50 for the same purpose!). Thanks for your help.
