first car? if you're wanting to save for a nice little C1 get something you dont mind pranging?

My first car was a 1987 Nissan Micra, i paid £100 for it. In my inexperience i hit bollards and walls and stuff in it, stuff which on a car like that didnt matter. then when i went through a long period of time of knowing i was a better and wiser driver, i then got myself something nice...

Some people may argue that older cars will break more, my micra only ever had wear and tear issues (tyres, brakes, fuel filter) and at most i spent £100 on parts as i sought cheap or second hand parts to the car only being needed for 12-18 months at most.

I'm not saying only spend £100 on a bucket, but maybe just look a little below something you were thinking, so if you do make mistakes, it doesnt really matter...

I always run a mile when someone puts 'first to see will buy' in an advert. It always smells of desperation in my eyes.:(

They're very cheap and mechanically sound. For a first car on a tight budget you're looking for a set of wheels to get you around, not a BMW.

However, for me there are plenty of cars that are similarly reliable but perhaps a bit better to drive than a CityRover. Saying that I haven't seen a CityRover in years!

Some suggestions that haven't been mentioned

I have a softspot for the daihatsu cuore and its sister model whose name I've forgotten. Dead cheap to buy, run and insure, and will probably still be running long after I'm dead. Plus its so slow you'll never get done for speeding.
Daewoo kalos, 1.2 plenty of choice, nearer £1500 but will be far more reliable than the usual 'thrashed to hell' crap from the big names you get in that price range, and also comes with toys like aircon on some. And being a daewoo it has the ultimate in security - no budding car thief will want to be seen in it by his mates.

There's also the kia rio. No idea what its like other than known to be quite reliable and cheap (looking, and to buy), just putting it out there.

I always take their reviews with a pinch of salt. :)

No sane person takes Top Gear seriously.

Looks tidy that apart from no mileage mentioned! Obviously go look and make necessary checks. If its done stupid miles don't bother, but for the money it does look good in the pics.

I wouldn't turn away the cityrover so quickly. I know they're rubbish to drive but they're can't be unreliable. Every other taxi in India is one, because its actually a Tata Indicar (well the cab version's an indicab) with a rover badge on.

    LOL

When anyone mentioned "city rover" I always thought of the Rover 25 with the huge black !!!!!! bumpers on it (AKA those awful kids shoes with the anti-scuff toes)..... I didn't realise it was a different car altogether!

As long as it's not a Rover engine, it should be a good little/cheap car?
