laptop slow booting up

dhcp is the protocol that issues a PC with an ip address so that it can talk to the outside world.
I think you have a wireless router, rather than peer to peer.
If you switch on the PC, without the router on, windows will allocate a default 169.x.x.x ip address, but it will try for a while to look for a dhcp server to issue a 192.x.x.x or 10.x.x.x ip address, it usually gives up after a minute if it can't find one and dishes out a 169 address.
So I was just wondering if there was some misconfiguration on your PC that was causing this to stall, as I said before it could be a red herring, because loads of things can cause startup delays.
Re eventvwr, just have a look to see if you can see a delay between switching on and working, all events are logged with a time in 3 logs, it is difficult to tell you exactly what to look for.
This might help find the culprit, uninstall it after you have tried it, because ironically it will actually make bootup slower while you are doing the diagnostics.

try turning on the windows built in firewall, uninstalling zonealarm and rebooting
if thats the problem then install Kerio
Thanks Browntoa- I believe the built in Windows Firewall IS switched off but I'll double check.
I'll try uninstalling Zonealarm and see what happens - will come back to you.you know when you're getting older - the wife says, "let's go upstairs and make love" and you reply, "I can't do both" !!0 -

Hmm see what you mean - I dunno, loads of people have wireless built in and don't get this prob - in fact my old laptop had an external wireless card in one of the slots and it didn't stall the start up either !!

when I 'run' the eventvwr I get three tabs 'application', 'security' and 'system'. Then I double clicked on 'application and saw a lot of entries that I don't understand - I'm sadly outta my depth here a bit

I'm off to bed now so will try this tmrrw
