After 6years even if you hadn't paid all of the default debt off the default will drop-off your credit file and no longer be visible to anyone. Actually the whole entry in relation to that debt disappears.

I have 'one of those' too Lorna, aren't they just lovely?
Not sure if I can help, but I am in the same boat as you, have 5 defaults on my credit file after I paid my ex's cc's with a loan in my name, and he ran up further debts also in my name!!! Only 1 of the cards is down to me, but this was just trying to keep my head above water at the time, but am slowly paying them back now, 2 to be paid off by September yipee!
I'm the same as you, new to the forum, and worried about getting a mortgage in the future, in fact, any credit at all!Sealed Pot Challenge member 1315

Me too ladies, I also had one of 'those' husbands. I am paying off joint debt as well as personal debt. I also think when you live with a complete plank, you probs spend money to cheer yourself up - I know I did.
It is the fact you can't buy treats (or sometimes clothes) for the kids which is upsetting. I don't really care for my self - although cutting my own hair is probably not going to help me find a rich man, haha.0 -
Charlie spot on, spent money on crap when I was with him to give myself a boost, if only I'd known what was round the corner and saved the money!!!
Totally agree, it's depressing knowing I could give the kids so much more if I wasn't stuck with these debts, we're also in a council flat (flat is lovely, but neighbours are a nightmare!) as I couldn't afford our mortgage on my own, only way he'd allow me to sell was if he got the majority of the profit, was worth it just to be rid of him, but feel like it'll be forever before I can get out of debt and back onto the property ladder.
Charlie that made me laugh... I haven't had my hair cut in a year, it's down to my waist!!!
It's nice to know there are others in the same boat I have to say, albeit a crappy one :beer:Sealed Pot Challenge member 1315

Gambit and Charlie..thank you for making me laugh even though this is such a serious topic but you know without a bit of humour I guess life really wouldnt look so bright. And that 'boat' you are talking about Gambit...I've got a couple of buckets to keep emptying the water out so we dont sink if that would help??1st goal - reduce overdraft from £398 (feb2011)

Hi ladies, I too had one of those 'husbands' who left me with debt!!!
I am currently debating whether to try and see if I can get a contract with O2 , but I am worried sick about the credit check, I am on a joint DMP, has anyone got any experience with this? Thanks x0 -
Tixy, I'm about 4 and a half years into my defaults, but won't have paid them all off till probably into the 6th/7th year, does that mean the default will be wiped from my file? Will the debts still be on my file, but just with the balance and no default?
Lorna, glad you had a chuckle too, if we didn't laugh we'd probably be in tearsat least we know we're not alone in this boat, and those buckets would be fantastic right about now! Don't suppose your a hairdresser too??? :rotfl:
Sorry nsimpson, I don't have a DMP, just lots of defaults, not too sure about the jargon yet, but I can't get any credit whatsoever with the defaults, even though I'm paying them all off bit by bitSealed Pot Challenge member 1315

Yep after 6years you won't see the debt balance or the default on your file at all. It would look like the account/debt never existed. (Sadly it doesn't mean you don't owe it anymore though).
Nsimpson - how long have you been on your DMP? how many defaults do you have on your credit file? how old are they? I think you will probably struggle to get an 02 contract.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Well, I feel so pleased to have joined this site and 'met' you lovely people.
Tomorrow I speak with the CCCS to start my DMP properly and make sure that my budget is correctly set (6 years...grrrrooooooan!!!!) but more than that today I have joined the MSE £2 savings challenge and also the VSP challenge. I have applied for an online savings account....so shall wait and see. Fingers crossed....1st goal - reduce overdraft from £398 (feb2011)
