Need smallest 5 door hatch with largest boot combination - suggestions

Wouldn't touch a Dodge Caliber, though I thought it had the 2.0 CRD Merc engine in it, the 1.8 being petrol, the interior has edges rough enough to cut your hands and I suspect that a lot of parts shall be extremely expensive, though I reckon it would fit Golf clubs in the boot, I liked the look of these, till I sat in one.
Nissan Note, nice car, too small for Golf clubs though I would have thought.
I suppose the only option is some kind of small MPV as previously mentioned, though a possibility that is abit left field is the Golf Plus, large boot, and doesn't have the VW premium to the price used as it is a bit unloved in the car trade, though is still basically a Golf.
Depends if she wants to put the Golf clubs in the boot or is happy to fold the seats down to fit them in.
There are so many cars that fit the bill though.
Cheap used Prius, 57 plates around for £6000/7000 at car supermarkets.
Renault Modus.
Skoda Fabia, though a mate has a Roomster and that has proved reliable and well built, not fast though.
The only car that I think that will fit the fastish and family requirements would be a Focus ST, nippy and roomy, with good supply and reasonable residuals. Never driven one, but all Focus' drive well, not many problems with them, 5 cylinder engine sounds meaty, remember it is a Volvo engine.
Is the Note not built upon a stretched Modus Chassis so in theory much larger? Longer wheelbase etc...
If your talking Focus ST then surely R32 golf VXR Astra S3 etc etc come into the equation?0 -
From what I have seen the Focus ST is available in the OP's price range, the RS is rare, but the ST is actually quite common, the others you mention are relatively rare.
Though to be honest most normal hatchbacks are pretty rapid anyway.
I though the Note was based on a Modus chassis aswell, though I wonder if it was actually the Grand Modus, which is a very similar size to the Note.
In that price range I would be tempted by an Octavia VRS, there are plenty about in the new shape, not forgetting the very rapid VRS with the 170 bhp diesel engine, HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service in London) have used these for years in London, for when the chopper is out of action, faster than the Forester Turbos they had before, though they have petrol and diesel ones apparently. The 170 diesel can be remapped for 200 bhp, have used one in Southampton for 999 work in estate form and they are very good indeed.0 -
Just you mentioned the Note as being too small then mentioned the Modus... thats all... Not sure about the Grand Modus as in terms of simalarities to the Note....
I know VXrs can be had for the 8K but not surer about the R32... Should Imagine they'd be well under the £8k budget and the S3s well under depending upon year
Yup but a VRs Octavia not a hatch..... for £8k Id be looking at lots of quick stuff but none of it being a hatch.0 -
Thanks for all the suggestions. My friend has started checking them out. She looked at Honda Jazz which has potential, however for her budget it would obviously have to be a used model, and she has read that they become much less reliable and expensive to repair after 5 years. Also that Honda are not the most helpful manufacturer to deal with, when warranty repairs needed.
Any comments?0 -

I have just bought a Dec 2008 1.4 Honda Jazz for £7,999 with 15,000 miles on the clock from a main dealer. They hold their value and there is no other car of the size with such an large boot space and the flexibility of even more room with the back seats down.
I know other owners and have not heard them complain about repairs. Honda reliability is legendary.
Having traded down from a 4x4 I must admit I have been pleasantly surprised with the Jazz.0 -
