i am an old car fan and would never have a car i could not fix myself or need a laptop to fix! i love carbs and points on a car, no ECUs to go wrong which can cost £££££ to fix etc. plenty of old cars about which have been well looked after with low miles and owners.
  • Late 80s early 90s Range Rover, with LPG fited (40p a litre, yummy!) for £1500. Get as many kids in as you like, no less than four magazines on the newsstands full of adverts for cheap parts, loads of owners forums...

I like old cars too, but I prefer electronic ignition and fuel injection over points and carbs any day. They don't wear like mechanical components give better performance and mpg and they can be fixed cheaply. Most faults are wiring related, or if that fails, replacements are readlily available at scrap yards. Multimeter + wiring diagram allows most faults to be found.

agreed. I've been frightened of efi for years - I could always tune a carb - then I got my present efi and realised just how much more simple it is.
    ...and a ton more efficient.
  • What about the Saab 900 classic, loads of character, long-lasting, many safety features, and parts easily available from specialists. 900i is cheaper than the turbo and is likely to have had an easier life.

Can you see a theme here?

RWD = Right Wheel Drive. (as Tom has said) Power and steering through the same wheels is just wrong.
    I have a cunning plan!

Oh yes, after 18 months with an old E30 I'm still learning things about RWD.
I had a proper blast late last night on leaf covered wet roads, grinning like a loon, whooping out loud and generally enjoying the idea of steering using the throttle. Aaaaahhh, so good.

I've got a capri, and I have no problems putting my little girl into the back. Mine's a 1.6 and can do 250 miles on £30. Great fun to drive, very easy mechanicals, the same as a cortina/escort/sierra.

These would also be a investment as the value of them is now going up as they are quite scarse. Used to pay £50-100 for a rough one, they are now going for £300 for a rough un & upto £2k for a mint one.

PM Me if you want any info on capri's, as I've had 5 in the last 4 years.
