knocking sound while turning corners

hello i have a xsara Picasso hdi 2l 2003 plate, my problem is each time i turn a corner (especially turning right) i get a knocking sound as if something is loose, i can go over speed bumps perfect with no noise, its just when cornering and if the corner im turning has few bumps in road its worse. i have read some post referring to links and other things but i just wondered if anyone could be a little more specific and what things should i be looking at first.

thank you.

I know virtually nothing about cars, but I have had CV joints replaced in the past because of exactly the situation you describe - knocking when going around corners, silence when driving straight.

Depends -- is it a "thump thump thump" noise or is it more a knocking when you slow down to go round a bend?

If the latter it could be an anti-roll bar, control arm or similar suspension component (worn out bushes can sometimes give quite a knock on the overrun for example, which can be made worse by the turning of the car).

In any case it won't be expensive to replace -- £25 for a CV joint, less for the other parts.

If the knocking is regular and worse when accelerating its likely to be your cv joints but if the noise is irregular its likely to be steering or suspension. Drop links wear and cause knocking but from memory mine were noisy on speed bumps.

French cars are more reknown for being whole shafts, rather than just the CV joint, so I hope for your wallet that it is not required. Unfortunately it sounds like it, but as said above, could be suspension or even the hydraulics of the suspension.

Saying as a recon cv joint is about £25 for the car, what else on a french shaft is different that can wear compared to a german driveshaft?

I can't speak from experience though, our french driveshafts have just clocked up 135,000 miles now, on the original shafts and joints.

Usually, the gaiter will be split if a CV joint is knackered. It's the grease escaping from the split and consequent ingress of water and dust / grit that leads to the failure of the joint. If it's knocking worse on right-hand bends then it's more likely the left-hand CV joint that's gone and vice versa for left-hand bends. :) If there's no sign of a split gaiter then hold onto the driveshaft and twist it back and forth. There shouldn't be any play at all, a tiny little almost unperceivable bit should be okay but anymore than that, it's had its day. :)
