My OH was not able to withdraw money from our off-set mortgage savings a/c with Navy ID, passport, utility bill and mortgage a/c statement (he couldn't find the card despite me telling him where to look which is another story entirely). I, however, was able to withdraw £1k from the same a/c with no ID and just the card - surely I could have stolen the card from the house? ID and passport with utility bill is ample ID for money laundering purposes.
More fascinating to me was the fact I couldn't pay money INTO my OH's bank account as "I wasn't supposed to know he had an a/c" even though I was there when he opened the a/c and I said well I'll pay it into the a/c and you can send the receipt through the post (where I would open the post as OH was overseas!). We do have a joint a/c and my own sole a/c with the same bank (Nationwide). Bizarre!! Can understand if if I was trying to take money out but money in?

At no time have I ever managed to forget my wallet, but just happen to have a Driving license or passport on me though.
    .

I wonder if this came into their thinking?

Everyone I know keeps their driving licence in their wallet or purse.

Driving licence on its on maybe not enough ID as its unusal ( from my experience ) to have licence but not wallet.

It turns out that this is done at the discretion of the manager, who wasn't there, and the supervisor was with a customer with two more in the queue. What was I to do? Stating one last time how ridiculous this was, and that I would be back to close the account later, I walked down the road and took my £20 over the counter at Halifax.

    Nice one, Halifax.

shocking, how dare that supervisor serve another customer. i've never heard of such terrible behaviour. she should just have pushed the other customers aside and given you twenty pounds from her own purse. I mean imagine being expected to wait in a queue!

imho it sounds like the OP got a bit bolshy with the staff and his attitude was reflected back at him.
  • Our library rules state that you can't borrow a book or use the internet without a library card. Why on earth would the bank feel compelled to do give you money without a card?

Because it is the libabrys book and they give us permission to borrow it on their terms and the bank holds our money not theirs, what if the card was lost or stolen and money was needed before the new one arrived?

In Mary Poppins the bank refusing to hand over a customers money resulted in uproar and a jaunty song or two, maybe OP should have tried similar.

I never keep my driving license in my wallet. There is no requirement in this country to carry identification and until there is, I am happy to carry it only when necessary.

My driving license is a UK Government issued document that is a widely accepted proof of identification, so I don't see why it should be "not enough" for the bank. In any case, it wasn't a question of my own ID but a policy in place by Santander to refuse OTC withdrawals without a cash card. It would have been enough ID to open the account in the first place, and presumably sufficient to close the account, which, believe you me, I would have done there and then if time had allowed.

Oh, go back to your bridge, troll. My complaint was with the policy of refusing counter withdrawals with photo ID, which as far as I know is still acceptable in the majority of banks. I never complained that there was a queue to see the supervisor, merely stated it as fact. I wasn't bolshy in the slightest, and neither was the cashier - I simply requested a withdrawal which she refused.

Because it's my money. Why do you think that they are justified in witholding my money from me?

tbh it sounds like a storm in a teacup. just remember your wallet in future.

i personally wouldn't go into a bank and expect money without my cash card, but there you go.

The tide is turning. It now sounds as though you deliberately go into a bank without your cards just to exercise your perceived rights.

Nobody could forget their cards as often as you OP.

I think you'd be better off emptying your account and stashing it under the mattress. :)

I have been able to withdraw cash from my natwest and RBS accounts on numerous occassions without my bank card - its a very easy process.

Go to the customer service desk and explain you dont have the card on you, give them the account number if you know it and the id, they then get your details on the screen, ask you some secuirty questions, d.o.b,letters from password, recent DD or withdrawal amount etc and okay the money.
I've done the same with the Co-operative bank. Expecting any level of customer service from Santander is unrealistic.
