Saga - what do you think?

Hello, I wonder if anyone has any views on Saga Home insurance? The reason I ask is that I'm a bit perplexed at the way they do the renewals. They send me the renewal schedule and new premium. With this comes a price guarantee leaflet saying they will match any like for like quote. I go on the www and get a quote, from another provider, as a new customer. This undercuts the Saga quote by approximately £90:00. I phone them up and the advisor tells me as it's less than £100:00 he can agree the reduced premium over the phone. He therefore agrees a premium of approximately £170:00. This, for buildings and contents with extras for a large 4 bed. I just wondered what people thought and what service you have received when something occurs. Apologies for the lengthy post. Thanks.

I have house insurance with SAGA, due for renewal in a month.

Just renewed my car insurance with them, suing their price match. They were excellent in their dealing with my recent bump, when an old lady hit my car.

Hope they still have that price match when house insurance is due.

Never accept the renewal price first offered. All insurance companies will tempt you with a first-year low premium to get your business and then bump up the price for the second and subsequent years, relying on your lethargy in seeking fresh quotes.

I always swap my insurance company, every year - it gets the lowest prices and often is accompanied by a further cash-back deal if I go through Quidco and similar.

Just had my renewal quote from Saga for buildings insurance. I made a small claim last year so expected an increase. But....it's doubled to £653!! The cheapest on-line is £116. Saga's cover is very comprehensive, should disaster strike. I hope to sell and move so would need another quote later. Decisions, decisions.

    That does sound very cheap.
Are you sure you have high enough figures for both buildings/contents?

Saga are the same as any other insurer, they will massively overcharge on renewals. We just moved my MIL away from them as they offered insurance at over £300 for renewal, whereas the AA were £170, with £38 cashback.
It seems even a company that targets only the elderly, still have no scruples.

    Sounds reasonable.
    You're paying too much!

£170 for a large 4 bed house doesnt sound 'reasonable' it sounds very cheap.... You seem extremely price driven when it comes to insurance and defo don't focus on a DECENT policy.

Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance PLC. for the building and
Legal & General Insurance Limited. for the contents when we used the AA as brokers.
They were a comparable price to others from gocompare and moneysupermarket.
Not the cheapest, but certainly not the dearest.

So in your opinion, what's the problem with the companies above, and why don't you think any of them are decent, and why should we have paid more for what other benefits?

Separate buildings/contents policies might cause you a problem if you have to claim, unless you have no excess.
