Orange Broadband Demanding Payment.

Hello,

I got a letter from Orange Broadband telling me that they haven't received payment for my broadband, that they have cancelled my account and that I need to pay them £27.99 in outstanding payments, and if I don't pay they will take legal action. The thing is - I haven't been with Orange Broadband for over 5 years.

I cancelled my Orange Broadband over 5 years ago when they kept losing my payment details on their system. I got cut off from the internet every month and phoned them up to be told that they didn't have any payment details for me. I would give them payment details, but the next month I'd get cut off again for the same reason. After a couple of months I told them where they could stick their broadband and canceled. I actually phoned them up to cancel, I didn't just stop paying.

Before I ring them up and give someone in a call centre an earful I want to know what my rights are in this situation. I don't want to pay them a penny - they haven't contacted me about this in 5 years, and now I get this letter from them. It's ludicrous. They should have told me about any outstanding balances when I rang up to cancel. At the very least they should have sent out a letter as soon as I canceled. Sending it to me 5 years after the fact, and expecting me to pay up is insane. It's only £28, but that's not the point, it's the principle of the matter.

So, in short, do I legally have to pay them? If I refuse to pay them, what are they going to do?

They can pursue the debt for up to 6 years, which is presumably why it's been chased now, before it's time expired.
The issue is not the time that has elapsed, but whether the charge is valid.
Did you give a 30 days notice of cancellation as required? Were you out of your minimum term contract when you cancelled? If no, then the charge may be valid.

Have you checked your credit file to see if you have a default. If so how long has it been there.
They stay on your file for 6years

If you havent got a default, the only way is to pay it, stop the default appearing, if you get one it will hav
far reaching effects which will cost you way way more than £28.00 for the next 6 six years.

No mortgage, no credit etc. etc. etc.
    Pay it and forget it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • OK. Thanks. Does it help my case that I was under 18 when I had the orange broadband account?

How did you manage to get a contract for a mobile while under the age of 18?
