    Thanks,

So if the trader DOES see the card details there is a possibility they could use or pass the details on to someone else to be used fraudulently.? Unlike PayPal where the trader DOES NOT see the card details?

Currently I am failing to see the advantage of "verified by VISA"?

Verified by Visa is just an extra layer of security - you are transferred from the merchant's site to a page from your bank which requires a user name and random characters from your selected password. It is not related in any obvious way to your card details (ie card number, account number, name on card, security number, date of expiry etc).
It DOES work - someone tried to purchase a computer online using my card details but the purchase failed at the Verified by Visa stage (at least thats what I was told by the bank when they cancelled my card anyway!)
However, as I understand it, the requirement is driven by the merchant. I still find a lot of sites which don't require it.

Additionally, would someone building a web site for the purpose of scamming people just be able to include a "secure symbol" to fool the unwary?

    Thanks Brewerdave,

I am pleased to hear "verified by VISA" works, however I am surprised that having obtained your card details with a view to using it to purchase a computer that the criminal did not have the sence to use it on a site that was not protected by "verified by VISA". Perhaps they are few and far between?

You might want to get a prepaid card for online purchases - though I thnk you are being unnecessarily paranoid.

Just get a credit card: that way you have additional protection.

And don't rely on Paypal: they are so hard to contact that problems are seldom corrected.

    Thanks dzug1,

Sorry, do not know what a prepaid card is?

Ref being paranoid. Maybe, but this is something quite alien to me and I am just trying to become more knowledgeable which will enable me to make educated decisions.

As a result of this thread things are now much clearer.

Please correct any misunderstanding I still have.

I have made 10 or 12 purchases with my debit card since opening the account. The purchases have been between £2.20 and £24. Therefore having a credit card would not have offered any additional protection. I have not been so concerned about the individual transactions going wrong, goods not arriving, incorrect goods etc. I am more concerned about giving my card details away in order to purchase £2.20 worth of goods and then noticing random amounts disappearing from my account.

I now understand in the event of the card being used fraudulently, without authorisation etc there is no automatic right to have money refunded. Banks will attempt to recover money taken but advise there is no guarantee of success.

Using PayPal does not allow a trader to see your card details but in the event of a PayPal purchase going wrong it is unlikely PayPal will sort it out.

Verified by VISA does allow the trader to see the card details. If someone obtained your card details they would still be able to make purchases in stores not requiring verified by VISA.

In summary I believe I have been correct in avoiding using cards and will continue so to do, when my bank sends me them they generally go straight onto the fire. It is just a game of chance and the more chances the greater the risk of being caught out. Unfortunately we all have our weaknesses and when I see some bright & shiny A4 stainless steel nuts & bolts (particularly dome nuts!) my usual caution goes out of the window.

Bottom line is to check your household insurance policy.

  • I have a retail website but I don't see anyone card numbers. Someone just knowing your card number wouldn't make them able to use it in a shop - they'd need the card and your PIN.

What do you sell, and can we get a discount? :rotfl:
