New House - Phone/BBand still active

I picked up the keys to our new house today and I took a phone with me to check the phone line and I was able to phone a land line. I wasn't able to phone mobiles. I know the former owner who moved out today used to have his phone and broadband with Talk Talk.
I there anyway I can use this phone line instead of having to pay £120 for a new line. BT are the only cable layer in the area and I don't particularly want to go with Talk Talk

You can use the phone line, yes. But you can't use the account it's attached to. Indeed to use the same line, the current account holder - the vendor - will need to close the account. That has presumably been instructed - unless they forgot - and it just hasn't been disconnected yet.
The charge to "activate" the line (after it has been detached from the prior account) will be from £0 to £150 depending on the "state" of the line and who you go with. Whether or not the charge is applied seems to be somewhat random and the policy differs depending on who you choose and quite often the contract length.
Call your intended provider and see what they say. If you're not happy, try another...0 -
Am I right in saying I need the MAC code to move provider - if so how do I get it?0

You use a MAC to move from your existing ISP to another one. Your current ISP will give you one (you may have to pay termination fees if you are still in contract)
But is that what you want to do?0 -
You are not the existing account holder, so TT will not give you a MAC.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
