Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The drive is not working properly as it will only open a couple of rewritable CD's that I have. I have even put brand new ones in and it just will not open them.
Is there anything in there that can be cleaned?

Give this a try, fixed a few clients drives with it in the past. Even if this does not work, no harm will be done whatsoever.
1) Close all open programs
2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter
3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
* SYSTEM
* CurrentControlSet
* Control
* Class
* {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.
* UpperFilters
* LowerFilters
* UpperFilters.bak
* LowerFilters.bak
5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete
6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor
7) Reboot your computer0 -
I have just done as you suggested and deleted LowerFilters, but unfortunately it hasn't made any difference.
Thanks anyway.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -

Operating system is XP. Don't have itunes installed. I haven't got any burning software installed.
It used to work alright but this DVD/CD drive has hardly ever been used. Now it just seems to work with one or two CD's but with others it just will not open them - I have even tried some brand new ones. It seems strange that it will still work with with a couple though, so it can't be completely shot.
By the way Closed, thanks for all your advice a while back about my computer problem. In the end I did as you suggested and took it back to factory settings - vast improvement - so thanks again.
Any advice would be appreciated.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
Have you tried cleaning the lens inside the drive?
You can buy a cleaning disc from most pc shops or supermarkets that carry computer accessories, that has a brush or a pad on it to sweep over the lens and brush off any obstructing dust.0 -
In this situation, i would advise a customer to purchase a new Drive. They are so cheap these days and here's one that would cost £15 after postage.
You would only need a screw driver and common sense to remove the old one and replace it with a new one.
Note: You would need to confirm whether you have a SATA connection or an IDE to the back of the existing DVD drive. They are VERY different looking, IDE is a grey or black ribbon cable about 1.5 inches wide and very thin. A SATA cable is about 1/2 inch wide and again, thin. You should be able to remove the side panel of your PC with a screwdriver, either at the back (exposed) or hidden by a 'snap off' front panel. Then look at where the back of your optical drive is and have a look.
Good luck!If someone is worth thanking - click on the 'Thanks' button on their response. It's just a nice thing to do :-)

Have just downloaded the Microsoft Automated Troubleshooting Fix It thing.
Took quite a while, but still didn't fix the problem! Looks quite a useful tool though, have any of you tried it?
I also had to download the Microsoft.NET Framework program which seems quite big (88.29MB), so thought I would delete it. However, when I tried to do this I got a message saying it might cause other programs to stop working properly. How can this be? It has only been on my computer for less than an hour? Wish I hadn't bothered with it now.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0
