I'm sorry that I don't have any advice for you. It seems like you are doing your very best in a very difficult situation for Nan, Ben and you. I hope it works out.

She's not doing anything illegal whatsoever - she accompanies Ben to the bank to help him withdraw his money from over the counter and when they get home she helps to manage his money and gives him an allowance each day in his wallet to pay for meals at the day centre and then does whatever needs doing with the rest - its no different to someone who does have more capacity than Ben but is in supported housing, getting help with their finances from a key worker or support worker to help budget and manage money. Ben has no capacity at all with his finances - every note is a "fiver" to him ... He wouldn't even be fine with "if u want money u go to the bank" - he wouldn't understand neccesarily what a bank even is - if u gave Ben £1 and told him you could buy a house with it, he would believe you. He knows money "buys stuff" and he likes to have money in his Wallet but thats as far as his knowledge goes.

I agree that they haven't had as much ss support as they could have - and its very difficult for me to co-ordinate and help my Nan with that 100 miles away as well as try and hold down my own 40hr week stressful job .... I will get there in the end

    Thanks everyone

This is precisely why this situation isn't right - too much responsibility for your Nan, without a POA - I'm simply saying that she should have one, as he clearly isn't able to fend for himself!

In no way is this your responsibility to coordinate, and what you're doing to try to help them is admirable. I just wish you could all have some more structured support. And I fear that it will be difficult if not impossible to organise a private rental under these circumstances.

Either way I wish you all the best of luck.

Hi, sorry to hear about the difficulties you are having. Years ago I considered setting up an authority for someone else to access my bank account on my behalf, and although I can't remember the specifics, it was quite straightforward. The bank gave me a form to be filled out, and required the person to go into the branch with ID to set it up. I decided against it, but maybe it's time your gran made the arrangement official, especially if they are going to be using a different bank branch, where staff might question the current arrangement.

I don't know much about the it, or if it operates in your area, but HOLD is a shared ownership scheme set up specifically for people in your gran and uncle's situation, which would give them security of tenure. I would be interested in it myself if I had the money for the legal fees etc.

Hope you manage to sort it all out.
