Browsers

Hello, is there any limit to the number of web browsers you can have on your desktop. Can they cause conflicts with each other in any way. I currently have IE8, chrome and firefox and am thinking of downloading opera.

Is there any outstanding one amongst the bunch. Many thanks.

Daughter uses Chrome, I use FF & hubby uses IE. The Wii uses Opera. No reason you couldn't have them all. Whether they would all work open at the same time is another matter. Two together are no problem for me.

Nope - you can have as many web browsers as you like; just as you can have as many word processors or games as you want!

The only difficulty might be having different versions of the same browser - i.e. it's tricky to get IE6, IE7 and IE8 on the same machine.

There are two parts to a web browser: the rendering engine (which generally determines how to display web pages) and the user interface (UI) which specifies the layout of the menus, what settings you can change, etc.

There are only a handful of common rendering engines, so lots of browsers share the same one. For example, Chrome and Safari both use the WebKit rendering engine; while Firefox, K-Meleon and Camino use the Gecko rendering engine.

Personally I prefer Firefox as I like the user interface and the huge number of useful add-ons (e.g. NoScript, Ad-block Plus, Privacy+, TACO, Video DownloadHelper, DownloadThemAll, AutoPager, etc.)

Chrome does (in my experience) seem to render web pages faster, and seems less likely to crash when rendering pages containing large animation/video files, etc. But it doesn't have as many add-ons and (for some reason) the scroll buttons on my mouse don't work with it, which is annoying.

I use FF, and Opera, although prefer FF. Also have IE installed, but rarely use, unless an application insists on opening with it

I think Chrome's faster with a simpler interface
I use FF as it supports bookmark sync to my other PCs
Have to use IE for company intranet

Given the choice - I'd go for Chrome

  • I use multiple copies of Firefox at the same time for different uses, usually Sandboxed ;) It keeps the cookies separate and more secure. I have in the past had multiple versions of Firefox installed and running but lately I have only been using one version AAT.

There's no problem using multiple browsers on one system and there shouldn't be a problem running more than one at a time on most systems. I dislike Opera yet use it when encoding because FF tends to use up piles of memory and uses a fair bit of CPU time while doing nothing. But the problem with FF might be because I have a problem only opening a few tabs and limiting extensions to a minimum, they just multiply like rabbits.

For me the most important thing about a browser is functionality and FF wins hands down on this due to it's extensions. Customizability is also important and again FF can be setup the way I want it whereas most other browsers are very limited in this respect.

Speed is not an issue I bother about because I don't care if there is a hair's breadth between them.
