Firefox keeps crashing

I'm having problems with my PC since the new AVG Anti Virus Free Edition 2011 was uploaded. With advice from you techie marvels on here, I've managed to sort out the main problem but now Firefox crashes every now and again with the 'Firefox has encountered a problem' message.

I've followed Firefox's instructions for sorting this out but can only get so far. They say to close and exit FF, open My Computer, browse to C:/programfiles/mozillafirefox/components, then delete 'nsBrowserOpt.dll' and it's that bit that I can't find to delete.

Anyone have any ideas please?

Many thanks!

    Might help you,

Open up a folder window (ie my docs)

    click tools, folder options, view,

look for hidden files and folders, select show hidden files and folders and then ok.

you should now be able to see the .dll in the folder.

remember to change it back to Do Not Show..if you get annoyed by random system files/thumbnails everywhere

Thanks, everyone. Spike7451 - if I can't sort the problem I will change to Opera. I'm not very computer savvy, I'm afraid, so I'm thinking it's better the devil you know; I always think I'll cause further problems if I change anything. Can I try Opera first without having to bin Firefox - can you tell I'm not computer literate?!

Esoog - I tried all that and, sadly, still couldn't find the .dll. Thanks for the advice, though. At least now I know how to show hidden files and folders in case I need it in the future!

I did a very quick google and it seemed to say that that particular file is related to malware, not part of firefox install, it's possible that if you have a malware scanner etc it's been removed?

edit; infact that's what it says on the mozilla website. Do you have a malware/spyware scanner out of interest?

Yup,just click on the link below & then the download button, save to your desktop, then after you've downloaded it,click on the icon on the desktop & follow the instructions. You can then add wiggets like Ad-Bloce,Facebook & GMail links & the browser will even sync with your E-Mail clients like GMail,Hotmail ect & tell you of any new mail.

I binned Firefox after it started to give me non responsive scripts, crash ext then it'd start to lock up my PC.Scans by Malwarebytes,AV stuff ect shown no problems & even a fresh install didn't solve it.

    Hi Spike

Thanks for that - you didn't put a link in your post but I should be able to find it if I google Opera 11.1. Thanks for the advice!
