Being landline-free.....am I missing anything?

  • May i ask why you've decided to cancel your landline? Unless you live a long distance away from the exchange, that's the only way you'll get fast internet speeds (cable excl.) BT are gradually rolling out Fibre to the Cabinet, having a landline becomes even more of a necessity once every exchange become FTTC enabled (just a matter of time). Just something to bear in mind.

I've got Virgin cable, so not a prob.

I looked at the mobile route when I moved here and was considering options like yours.

Then I discovered services like skype, where you can make telephone calls over the internet. I use voipcheap and every 3 months I pay for 10euros credit. This gives free calls to landlines (01, 02 etc numbers) for 90 days. Then I use the credit for calling 0845s, mobiles etc. I don't call loads of these anyway and this works for me.

I've set up voipcheap to caller id as my normal mobile number (which is pay as you go) so people just assume I'm calling from my mobile, so they don't get confused by me calling from a different number, or call me back to a number that is not switched on.

That was actually one of the main reasons I didn't want to go the mobile route, as I'm happy with my existing pay as you go mobile package/number and didn't want to change it, nor did I want to have more than one mobile number.

You can also pay for a landline number if you want (voip cheap don't do it, but I found another provider that would for something like 2 euros a month) so you can take incoming calls. I didn't bother with that, as I don't use the phone loads, so people just call my mobile and I can phone them back to their landline if they want.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

Hello. I'm intrigued. Who's your Internet provider? Don't you get any inclusive landline calls?

If you dont want to use qxcall you could use http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php via their 0808 freephone access number for cheaper 0845/0870 calls

www.localphone.com offer access to 0843 for 9p a minute via a geographical 01/02/03 access number.

You can get yourself a free 01/02 geographical number with free voicemail to give to bank etc at www.sipgate.co.uk

You can make free conference calls from your inclusive minutes via a geographical number at http://www.unitedconferencing.com/
