    Hiya...back again!

    Ok, BT have been out and have put a new master phone point on the wall (right next to the PC now). This has the ADSL filter inside it. I have run a new speed test;

    Upload - 0.21mb/s
    Download - 1.95mb/s
    Ping - 74ms
    Distance < 50 mi

    So the upload speed has dropped but the download speed has increased. Is this the type of result I can expect tho?

    (I never turn the router off).

    Thanks

    What happens when there are loads of disconnects is that BTs system reprofiles your line and drops the speeds in steps until a stable connection can be maintained.

    Once it has been stable for a while, the system will then try upping the speed.

    AS LONG AS THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN CURED you should find the speed increases but it can take a week to get up to the max speed your line supports.
  • Thanks guys you have solved some of my problems, with speeds of downloads.
  • OK, Hi 'friendly' techies.

    Following advice rcvd so far, not repeatedly ignoring anyone, I have completed the speedtest as instructed from the internal master socket and also not through the internal master socket;

    Speedtest.net
    Master socket - Download 1.96mbps / Upload 0.38
    Normal socket - Download 1.95mbps / Upload 0.38

    Broadband Speed Checker
    Master socket - Download 1936kbps / Upload 378
    Normal socket - Download 1952kbps / Upload 378

    JAS X - I don't know what speed I should be expecting. I do know that my line keeps dropping. I do know (as per my original post) if i'm on i-tunes, youtube or spotify (for example) and I want to listen to music, it keeps buffering....just like it used to in the days of dial-up...not what I have been used to on broadband.
    And no, I haven't consulted neighbours.

    Hammyman - Thank you. Maybe I should wait a few days and see if my line gets re-profiled.

    Any other thoughts or suggestions or kind words of advice are appreciated.

    TBH at 1.96Mbps, you have ample bandwidth for Youtube and/or Spotify and streaming. If its buffering it is because of something else in the chain and could be a hold up in your ISPs network or someone downloading on your network.

    Ok that test eliminates your internal wiring being a problem, next steps as above would be to see what BT think you should be able to get using macman's link

    To consult the neighbours you don;t need to go talk to them just tap your postcode into one of the speedtest mapping sites like this one:
    http://top10.com/broadband/speedtest/streetstats/

    and look for any uploaded speedtests near you..... will also give an indication if any non-BT providers are delivering faster services via LLU connections (going to the samknows site and looking up your exchange will tell you which operators are available to you on an LLU basis, LLU = not over BTs network)

    Final 2 things that could be limiting you:

    1-you are only on a 2 meg tariff / otherwise have your speed capped to 2 meg by your ISP

    2-as mentioned above you need to give it a week or 2 for your profile to reset itself (always turn a router off first b4 unplugging the phone line as disconnecting a live BB link can screw with your profile and see you slow / waiting for a reset/recovery again)

    3-you have a virus/other malware/on your PC screwing with incomming/outgoing data on your machine slowing it down (can you test on a 2nd PC connected to the same router?

    4-finally 'could' be somethign up with your router or a dodgy cable but thats quite unlikely
