Hi Techies.
I need some advice. I am running Win xp on my home pc (Broadband). A couple of months ago, I noticed that I kept losing conection. It seems to be getting worse but could just be that I am getting really, really cheesed of with it!! Had BT around, and they renewed some cable. I have put a new ASDL microfilter on and have re-booted my router (Netgear) a number of times. Nothing. Still the same. For example, I go to I-Tunes or Spotify and it buffers...it's like going back to dial up. I use AVG, Windows defender & c-cleaner as protection.
What could it be? What should I do next?
Thanks in advance. - Newboy.

have you tried disabling antivirus (temporarily) to see if that helps.
wireless or wired connection, and have you compared both? buffering could be incorrect router setting but could be a number of things.
Have you visited https://www.speedtest.net ? report the result0 -
Ok...will run the test and advise. Also forgot to mention that i run a laptop (wireless) obviously on the same router...same problem.They call me Mr Pig!:laugh:0

So it's a router, internal wiring, or external line problem.
Move the router to the BT test socket behind the NTE5 master socket split faceplate and retest from there-if you are running off a dodgy extension socket and/or long extension cable, that could be the problem.
Which cable did BT replace?No free lunch, and no free laptop

Ok, have completed speed test...as follows;
Ping - 142ms
Download Speed - 0.13mbps
Upload Speed - 0.37mbps
Server <50mi
ISP - BT Internet - 2.3 / 5
So...is that slow??

Er, yes, it's practically stationery. Your upload is faster than your download. Your download is only about twice as fast as dial up (0.13Mbps).
Has this test been done from the BT test socket as suggested?No free lunch, and no free laptop

You could try http://speedtester.bt.com/ if you regularly turn your router off it'll cause your line to be set to a low download profile, you may need to leave your router on for 3 days to get the connection back up to speed.0

Hiya...back again!
Ok, BT have been out and have put a new master phone point on the wall (right next to the PC now). This has the ADSL filter inside it. I have run a new speed test;
Upload - 0.21mb/s
Download - 1.95mb/s
Ping - 74ms
Distance < 50 mi
So the upload speed has dropped but the download speed has increased. Is this the type of result I can expect tho?
(I never turn the router off).
Thanks

Ok, BT have been out
you need to stop getting BT out (they will start charging you and if basic testing you have so far ignored shows you need their help to fix the issue they might not come out a 3rd time)
as instructed TWICE above, open your master socket and connect your router (and ideally nothing else) into the internal master test socket, see how that affects things.
Repetedly ignoring people trying to help you will probably result in said efforts to help you rapidly drying up........
What speed are you expecting/do you think you should be getting? -are you on a particular package and have you consulted one of the speed test mapping sites to see what your neighbours might be getting?0 -
I was going to suggest that the OP posts his router stats, but maybe we'd better just wait for the results from the NTE5 first-one step at a time.No free lunch, and no free laptop

We had this problem once, but it was on cable broadband. We blamed it on everything, my OH was testing the points etc, even got the modem replaced. In the end we got a new router because we wanted to go wireless, and the problem mysteriously went away ...........What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0
