Nationwide Flex Account

  • can I ask why? Doesn't Visa work abroad anymore? I thought they worked in all cash machines - world wide ;)

It depends which account you have. If you have the cureent account (flexaccount) you can use in overseas cash machines.

HOwever if you have a cash card account, you used to be able to withdraw cash out of machines in uk and overseas. Nationwide then replace your cash card with a "cash card plus" visa card so you gained the ability to use the card as a debit card in the uk and overseas but lost the ability to use it in overseas cash machine. Can still use it in uk cash machines.

Just a quick tu'penneth and moan! Yep, the flex-account decision to charge for withdrawals abroad is a pain but I've still kept the account as a back-up. We're off travelling in Europe for a break in a few weeks and NW have now reintroduced an unhelpful form to tell them of foreign travel. "Unhelpful" that is certainly for anyone touring without fixed dates and times - the form does not allow this info to be passed on to them and they do not seem able to accept secure message notifications, they eventually "admitting" that the form is inadequate. A quick visit to my local branch of 4 miles away solicited the advice to simply ring the bank if withdrawal was refused whilst abroad. Helpful, local, responsive? Nope.:(
  • Not keen on first direct as they're a part of HSBC

I appreciate that you may not be overly keen on HSBC but they are in general a very good bank. Their on line banking is top notch as is their in branch service. Also they have not had any government money which is more than can be said for certain other banks. Furthermore their global diversity gives makes HSBC a very secure place to put your money. All the best

  • I am with the NW and have been for many years. Have now moved my main acount away from them as they red my o/d twice in 12 months. No real reason for them to do this as cr turnover etc did not change. The 1st time i managed ok, but the second time needed their help, called their collections area, found them to be blunt and unhelpful, had to commit or no help, so ended up commiting to an amount that as tough for me to meet. managed to clear it off, but then closed my account. Whilst paying back the o.d they still charged intrest too (which I know for a fact other banks do not). So they are ok until you need help really.
 Live well laugh often, love much.

1 overdraft with Santander paid off, credit card almost gone, 1 overdraft that has been halved!! V chuffed with myself!!! :T
