A Warning About Sony Vaio Laptops Customer's are being Conned - Advice Required too:)

Hi Everyone.

I purchased a pre-order Sony
VPCEB4J0E/WI for £470 on 20/01/11. I was advised it would be around 4 weeks to deliver. True to their word and ahead of schedule my laptop was ready for delivery on the 01/02/2011. I could not collect utiil 08/01/2011 (this point will become relevant soon:)). When I opened the laptop I checked the specification and it was far inferior i.e. my spec was to contain a 500Gb Hard Drive, 2.53 Ghz processor and an Intel HD Graphics card with 1Gb dedicated memory.

What I recieved: 2.40 Ghz processor, 280Gb hard drive and a standard graphics card with no dedicated memory.

Called customer services who advised Sony made a mistake and I could have a full refund or keep the prodict with £100 back. I said this is not what I want, they do sell laptops with this spec, just send me one of those and I will be happy. But they won't because that type of spec costs £639. At a £70 more cost to them, minus the £100 refund amount.

They say they have no legal obligation to provide me with this, but surely they would have a moral duty and uphold their reputation obviously not.

My other point is they ARE STILL advertising this product as the spec I bought falsely misleading customers.

The other point is, that I recieved no communication from Sony to advise of their mistake had I not checked the equipment I would have been CONNED into thinking this was what they said it was.

When I queried this with them, they said they stated phoning customers on the 9th February! That is ridicoulous, they would have known the product was inferior as it was coming off the production line and being sent out to those orders.

Any advice would be apprecitaed. I also posted to warn others from buying this product and being conned.

Thanks,

Donna. :)

Is this a seller just got their description wrong, or is it the manufacturer that is wrong?

    Where is the misleading advert?

You say you have contacted "them".
Is that Sony or the retailer?
  • Hi,

This is advertised by Sony themselves not only on their website but their sales staff also told me this is the spec of the product, and by them sorry, yes I did mean Sony, was trying my best not to waffle and produce a long winded post :)

This is the link to the product which is still live, but they are not shipping this product out to their customers but a lower spec model. The Sony customer services person I spoke to had informed me many customers had been affected by this.

So did you buy direct from Sony?

I ask because any remedy should be sought from whoever sold the thing to you.
  • Yes direct from Sony and I have tried to rectify with them but their option of a full refund or £100 partial refund is not adequate.

Sorry to keep asking questions, but if you bought from that webpage you have linked to, then you probably did not buy from Sony.
If I were to buy from that webpage then my purchase would be from Sony Centre Portsmouth, which is an independent company.
I understand that in other parts of the country you may be purchasing from some other Sony Centre, which is also another independent company.

So looking to Sony to resolve your problem may not be the right thing to do.
  • Thank you for your help. Could you explain how you found out that that link is a Sony Centre and not Sony?

It only goes to a local Sony centre if you put a postcode in. You also have the option of buying from Sony Direct

So if I never put my postcode in I would have bought from Sony direct? This is really confusing! Are Sony centres affiliated with Sony?
  • You don't want a Sony Vaio anyway, I had one last year I had only had it about 3 months and looked after it really well, for some odd reason there was a horrible noise coming out of the fan area (there was nothing stuck in it or anything) and it was getting really hot. So I called them up and they said I can take it back to where I bought it from luckily it was Tesco Direct and get a full refund. I did just that and got myself a £200 cheaper Acer laptop with more features.
