Avast free is better than avg 8 free

Hello, Currently I'm running avg 8 free anti virus/spyware. I've read that the basic avast free is better. Opinions please. Many thanks.

AVG 8 is way out of date
But sure, Avast is definitely better

make sure you use the AVG REMOVAL TOOL first

In this month's PCPro magazine, AVG 2011 came out the best of the free a/v protections. "It outclassed not just its free rivals but almost all of the paid-for packages in the malware test".
I use Kaspersky by the way, so no axe to grind!

AV Comparitives website which has the most comprehensive tests available show AVG lower than most
Definitely lower than both Avast and Avira (Which I use) in all of the latest main tests

Thats before we get to how much AVG tends to give users 'slowdown' problems and the like

Personally I think Microsoft Security Essentials is now better than both AVAST and AVG.

MSE actually performs worse than AVG in the av comparitive tests

MSE also uses more resources than Avast and Avira

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • I've run avast for the last couple of years, but as it's never detected anything i don't know if it's any good! I think that the combination of Adblock+ and NoScript is actually what's keeping me safe.;)

Thats what makes me laugh - when people say their av has never detected anything nasty so their av has never let them down. How would they know if their av has failed them? :p

And yes, noscript will definitely be protecting you from browser based nasties which is the easiest way these days to catch nasties (other than dodgy downloading of course)

moved from AVG to Avira a few years ago, no problems at all with it, caught a couple of things over the years. Its last updates have made me think about changing, Vista doesnt recognise it for some reason, its now not on microsofts site and it stopped updating automatically but solved that with the scheduler.

Every time I think about changing though cant find anything that suggests MSE or Avast is any better though.
