What is the usual etiquette?.. Just done a seminar with another person. We split the topic between us and I gave her copies of all my notes and research etc.. she hasn't done the same and I'm sooo  She's ignoring my emails and txt messages so nothing much else I can do is there?

Essay is due in on friday for this and I've now got to do a huge chunk of research more deeply than I expected, while she's gonna have a nice easy time of it

Sorry.. just wanted a rant, thanks peeps

  • Tell your lecturer/unit leader.

Usually with these sorts of things they let you give each other a % based on what work you've done. Perhaps you can justify your means through that?

I dunno, but it's best discussed with someone first, do it tomorrow before it's too late!

is it a joint assignment? as in your ment to be working in a team or individual - if its individual but you've decided to work together there is prob little that you could do
if its a joint assignment, email or see your tutor and just ask for their advice
    Yes Your Dukeiness :D
  • yes it was joint...

I didn't want to do that cos I dont want to be a snitch but I dunno what else to do.. I thnk I'll just do my best with the essay and if I get a low mark then I'll explain why to the tutor

tell them before not afterwards - it will reflect badly on you.
  • Trust me, don't worry about being a 'snitch', that's a term left in the playground.

This is your mark we're talking about, and if this girl isn't putting any effort it (therefore tarnishing your result) you've got every right to ensure the right people are told on this.

I'm not sure what the policy is at your uni, but once you've handed an assignment in at mine, you can't change it. (unless you fail, then you get to do it again, but your mark gets capped at 40%) so explaining to the tutor AFTER you get your result is probably a bad idea

go see your tutor now, really dont wait, at the end of the day you have to look after yourself, if she says anything then say i couldnt contact you so i was simply asking the tutor if they could contact you
at the very least your tutor will be more understanding than if you approach them afterwards
    Yes Your Dukeiness :D
  • Thats the thing.. we both put loads of effort in, but we covered different decades and it wasn't on powerpoint, we just gave a talk with sheets to refer to and therefore I now have only half the period concerned covered whilst she's sitting pretty with all of it.

Just emailed her again.. see what happens tomorow

    Thanks peeps

I had a problem simular to this last year, group project with 3 other people, two didn't show at all the third was there for 2 weeks total. Started on the full project on my own and the third guy got in contact with me the week before it was due to be handed in. Had to do a full presentation on my own and pretty much write the whole report.
When it came to the presentation i stated the facts about what happened, i also included the situation in the introduction and conclusion of the report, but as i had talked to the lecturers at the time of the presentation, they knew the situation.
To top it all, i had to complete the report for the resit, even though i failed another part of the course work and not the report. i simply resubmitted the orginal report mentioning the situation as a disclaimer to protect myself from being accused of plagurisim.
My advice talk to either the lecturer issuing the coursework or your advisor and see what happens. At the end of the day it's YOU that could lose out and if the other person has screwed you over, as it seems, then you have to protect yourself as much as you can.
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.
  • This happened to me also in a group of 3. The 3rd girl didnt even bother to come to meet uo when we were putting the whole thing together and researching.

We emailed the lecturer and let her know what was happening and on the day of the presentation we did our part of the presentation and said "and now
is going tp present the conclusion".

Her face was a picture as she struggled to speak and had no slides, handouts or visual props to refer to. It was obvious to everyone what had happened and she was suitably embarassed. Luckily the lecturer allowed the marks to be split individually and we got a first.
You HAVE to speak to your lecturer about this girl. Its not "snitching" its wanting to pass your degree!
