I've only ever used PAYG phones. I spend less than £10 per month (on ASDA PAYG). However I would like to use the Internet on my travels. I currently use a Samsung D900i and though I can get web pages the screen is small and the interface is clunky. I'd like some guidance as to what kind of phone would be good, and whether that needs to be a Smartphone given my limited reqirements.
Also would I be better looking at a Pay Monthly deal which provided lots of data with relatively few free minutes and texts? I wouldn't be watching films or downloading massive files, just browsing the BBC, Ebay and a few forums I subscribe to. I wouldnt need any Facebook or Twitter gubbins,

There are payg deals out there now that will give you some free web if you top up regularly. As for smartphones, they are coming down in price all the time but the one that people on payg keep going back to is the Orange San Francisco. It can be unlocked for free (and it's very easy to do) and then you can use it on any network you like.If I've helped you please show your appreciation by using the "Thanks" button

Believe that the OSF spec is downgraded less ram and inferior screen on later models .

RAM is the same @ 512MB, but "inferior screen" is a matter of personal choice.
It's true the early grey ones had an OLED screen compared to LCD screens of the later grey and white ones. However both are a trade off, AMOLED has better contrast and viewing angle, LCD has sharper text and better outside visibility.0 -
I've seen many recommendations of the OSF. However I'm not clear if I need a Smartphone. Are there phones with bigger screens than mine (maybe touch) and better web interfaces which would enable me to do what I want without going to the expense of a Smartphone, most of whose features I would not need.0

There is no official definition of a smartphone
If you want something touch screened with decent internet capability, the the OSF really is going to be your best bet, as it has a high (480x800) res screen. Plus you can then install the official eBaY and PayPal apps onto it from the Market (as that was one of your requirements).0 -

Paul Ockenden Mobile & Wireless PC Pro.
Says some users have noticed that recent devices have 256mb ram
Some also actually seem to have 512 mb but its locked down to use only 256 mb .
I am unable to verify that .

Some foreign market devices are like that, and ZTE released a patch that allowed you to use the rest of the RAM.0
