SOLVED - Stop password Qu in Windows 98 startup

Ok, so I just fixed some driver issues I had which slowed down my startup process, now the only thing stopping my startup is that it always asks for a password (which I always leave blank) before starting up.

Anyone know how to tell it not to ask about password?

On my previous installs I'm sure it never used to ask this question.

I probably knew the answer to this many years ago, but if so, I've forgotten. Problem is that you are using an OS that almost nobody uses any more.

I'm curious - why do you need to use such an antiquated operating system?

change the extension of your .pwl file in c:\windows to anything, eg pwx. (you could delete it, but this is safer)

avast4 still works on W98 btw.

Throw machine in bin and get yourself a new one. Can't believe anyone is still running 98 on a desktop and thinking it's a good idea.

  • WINDOWS LOGON and not the other option - sorry - cannot remember what the other one is off the top of my head!

You need to reboot after chaning that option.

[strike]Thanks I'll ty that.[/strike] The solution in the previous post worked

    To the others,
I don't *need* to run it, I choose to, because I don't really want to buy Win 7 & the 2 or 3 Gb RAM that would be needed. And it (Win 98) is lightening fast compared to what Win 7 would be. My comp doesn't need to go in the bin as it is a 2Ghz CPU, well up to the task.

There's nothing valuable on my machine, but I don't think anyone has bothered to hack me anyway. And I don't get virus' (viri ?)

I started with Win98se machines 5 years back.

They would never ask for a password, but would as soon as I'd installed a network card.

I remember removing the card, and the prompt would disappear.

    That's without me altering anything.

I *don't* believe there is a way of avoiding this.
    Move along, nothing to see.

    Thanks V much.... :D

I looked up "windows logon" in "help"
    and got the following
To specify a primary network logon
    1. to open the Network dialog box.
    2. Click the Primary Network Logon arrow, and then click the client or logon option you use most often when you log on to the network.
    3. Click OK.
    Notes
    • You can also open the Network dialog box by clicking Start, pointing to Settings, clicking Control Panel, and then double-clicking Network.
    • To start Windows without verifying your logon to a network, click Windows Logon. No error messages will appear if you cannot be logged on to the network (when you are using a portable computer on the road, for example).
    • If you see two separate logon screens when you start Windows—one for Windows and one for the network—you should use the same password for both.

So I opened the Network dialog box, and swapped
"Client for microsoft Networks" to "windows logon" rebooted and no passwords :T

Most Windows OS changes since W98SE are superficial from a functionality point of view, the main downside of W98 is lack of driver support for newer hardware.
