Granite worktop - how can I remove water marks around sink

We have granite worktops which are about 9 months old. We have very hard water (and no water softener) and have water marks/stains around the sink and drainer grooves which I can't remove. When I feel it with my hand they are raised. The whole area looks dull compared to the rest of the worktops.
Please can someone advise how they can be removed. I've googled and seen lots of articles about using vinegar but am loathe to do so in case I ruin the granite.
Should I look to install a water softener (although I'm loathe to do so as a friend says theirs cost £1,000).
Thanks very much.

Just use normal limescale remover, you won't damage the granite.

Before using a chemical try a fine wire wool, if the scale is sat on the surface this will remove the bulk, then a chemical can remove the residue.0

Try a pumice stone.
Soak in water first. This should remove it without scratching the surface. Works in toilets and baths too.0 -
Diluted white/distilled vinegar worked wonders on my shower screen.
You could try it, but beware that granite is porous so wipe if off quickly. Perhaps test drive it on an "inconspicuous area" first?0 -
White vinegar, apply - leave - repeat as necessary..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Thanks to you all for your replies. I'm going to try the fine wire wool or pumice stone at the weekend. If that doesn't shift then I will follow up with the vinegar option. This will be a lot cheaper than a water softener! :j0

I really, REALLY wouldn't advise using neat vinegar on granite, the acetic acid will cause etching in the granite.
If you must use vinegar, find an old spray bottle, fill it with 1/4 vinegar and 3/4 water. Shake it up thoroughly and lightly spray the affected area and wipe down quickly. Then rinse with water a couple of times before drying there area.
Anything else will ruin the finish. The answers Alan M and cavework gave are the best soloutions, by a long shot.0 -
I don't think you'll get the marks off without leaving further marks where you scrubbed the granite. The best you'll be able to do is reduce the marking slightly. I'd try Cillit Bang first though.Everyone is entitled to my opinion!0

You could try a hob scraper. The sort that is a razor blade inside a handle, it is designed to remove residue from glass hobs but not scratch.
I have granite, but not hard water. But I do know I would not use anything like Cillit Bang or any chemical based cleaner from the high street.
We use Lithofin, we have natural stone just about everywhere, floors, worktops and some walls.0 -
I'd take care before using anything - whilst granit is very tough the surface coating may not be. Either ask a granite supplier and or get a sample from one to try scraping it first - i'm currently considering granite worktops and picked up 3 samples over the weekend. Please let me know how you get on - I'm interested regarding the staining - as you have the worktops would you recommend them or should i stick to laminate?0
