Match.com= "accidental" double payments

Hi everyone, new on here.
Just a warning to anyone thinking of taking out a subscription with this company.
I joined for a year with payment split over 3 months, £39.60 per month using my debit card, big mistake! I completed the payments in December 2010. On the 15/1/11 another payment was taken. I called the call centre, spoke to someone in Morocco who said sorry it is a mistake and the money will be refunded forthwith and I would receive a call from his supervisor the next day. No call.
Couple of days later I called back, no money in my account, and I'm now overdrawn! Eventually got through to a UK phone and was told that they knew nothing about the call, and although they had taken £39.60 from my account they would refund it in about 20 days, oh yes, that's, working days. I was not happy as you can imagine, I'm now £76 out of pocket including bank charges.

I asked to be put through to the complaints department. This is where it becomes farcical. They do not have a phone number because they don't speak to the public. Email address? They don't have one, this is an internet company remember.
So I write them a letter.
Two weeks later, still no money and they haven't even bothered to reply to my letter. Called again and after being cut off 4 times, spoke to a girl in the uk who told me the money was still being processed, and they still have a few days before the 20 working days are up. She doesn't know anything about my out of pocket costs, I have to take that up with the mysterious complaints team.
I'm currently going through the same sort of stuff with the CEO's social media manager. He doesn't know anybody on the complaints team.
I did an internet search on match.com complaints and found I am not alone in this, both here and in the States. AVOID, you have been warned!
Sorry to waffle on but I'm very angry and frustrated.

  • Yes and I've just gone back onto the "official match.com blog" to find my comment has been deleted. No bad language or threats or libellous quote, just asking what was going on.

    DO NOT JOIN MATCH!!!!!!!!

I just had to jump in here. I was on match.com and i was charged after my membership ran out. They call it "auto renewal" and seemingly it is for the customers benefit.

In my personal opinion it could be called a scam. I know a lot of people who have had money taken from their accounts after they thought the membership had ended.

There is another match.com thread elsewhere on this site. If you google "match auto renewal" you will see literally thousands of people complaining about them.

In all honesty i think match.com are the evil empire of internet dating.

Lots of complaining on here - obviously not getting enough sex.

I'd stick with paying for match.com if I were you :)

Are you for real? This is a warning thread, I am £76 out of pocket to a company that seems to make a habit of taking money without authorisation.
I fail to see the comedy value here!

To be fair to them, plenty of companies have services that run until cancelled by the customer, and auto renewal isn't an inherently bad idea.

    I HATE MATCH.COM

    Thanks tom,

I agree auto renewal is not necessarily a bad thing. But match could do a few things to ensure that the customer doesn't feel he has been well and truly shafted by them. You look at the VISA guide for best practice for autorenewal and match.com don't follow it. They should send an email saying they will be taking money before they actually do.

I'll be honest, I hate match.com and looking at other consumer forums a lot of other people think likewise.
