Moving to new home, current owner taking their phone number with them

Wife and I are curerntly staying with family before we move into our new house and want to get our broadband sorted out before we move in. Problem is that the current owner is taking their phone number with them and I'm having trouble finding out from BT what the new number would be when we move in, and it appears that when signing up online for BB packages you must supply a landline (we were with Virgin in our old house).
Anyone have any idea how to go about getting what the new number will be from BT without having to sign up to their BB and Phone package (we want to take the 02 landline service too)
thanks

You will need to apply for a reconnection/new line with O2 and O2 will give you a new telephone number. You do not need to call BT as you do not want any services from them.0

If there is no need for an engineer to visit the house there shouldnt be a fee
I am in the same boat as you and got my the line sorted out yesterday and wasnt charged0 -
That's a pain as they'd likely charge me a line connection fee. I'll be phoning o2 today to confirm.
cheers
Have a feeling O2 charge £85 in all cases. Might be wrong on that though - see how you get on.
Most charge something these days, from £0 up to £150, unless you take a long contract.
Just a caution: when you order the line you'll be given a provisional number for that line. You'll then be eager to order the broadband straight away.
If it's all O2 then fine, if you have one supplier for line and other for broadband, ignore the number you were given and wait until the line is connected, then dial your mobile to find out your number.
In 2 out of 3 cases, the number we ended up with was not the one we were issued with and so had we ordered broadband I'm not sure what would have happened.0 -
