Sicky baby

Hi all,

We have a 3 month old lad. He didnt take to the breast so we put him on the usual SMA powdered milk. From the start he has always been fairly sick between feeds, it was usually a bit when winding but then alot 2 to 3 hours later. The health visitor said try him on wysoy so i did and it stopped it being so bad for a while. During this time he has had regular weigh in's and has only been putting on 2-3oz a week when we were advised 4-6 is normal. The health visitor wasnt concerned but when we had a check with the doctor she was and he got admitted straight into hospital (all of last week!)

During his time in hospital he was put on Nutramigin for a day, that helped a bit but not too much, then he was put on nutramigin AA which helped him put on weight and stopped him being sick.

2 days later at home he's started being very sick again but this time its almost entirely purely water! Its like hes absorbed all the milk powder from the water and pukes up the water. We have an appointment with the docs on monday but they have said they have explored just about everything now. They think he is alergic to the proteins in milk AND has bad reflux but this latest milk + his reflux medication was the last thing they could think of.

Has anyone ever had a similar experience? i hate to see my little man being sick so often, he soaks himself and gets all upset, sometimes it makes him cough and splutter and it also stops us from sleeping most of the night because we're worried he'll be sick in the night without turning to the side.

Feeling a bit down about this now and we just want him to be better :(

  • The thread will probably get closed Bufger because of the ban on medical advice, but I wanted to send you and your OH and boy some good wishes. My good friend's daughter had terrible reflux and a milk intolerance as a baby and they eventually put her on milk thickeners, but it took a long time to sort out. I will never forget the time she projectile vomited all over my mother in the Ikea restaurant one day,. poor wee mite. She's elevn now, and enormously tall and gangly and healthy, I'm sure your boy will have an equally healthy life once they sort him out.xx

  • I had concerns about my dd2 being sick in the night and choking. I was assured that turning their head to the side was a natural reaction when being sick so try not to worry yourself about him choking.

I hope you get to the bottom of things asap, it's horrid when they are so tiny.

my baby was exactly the same on sma, she has reflux.
I switched her to hipp organic milk as it is much kinder to the digestion (poos are as when breastfed) she also has gaviscon in each bottle this has been wonderful she stills spits up a bit but it doesn't cause her pain and is only excess milk, not the clear acidy fluid.
Also keep baby upright as much as possible i have her moses basket lifted at one end as i do her pram etc.

My little boy has reflux, when he got to 16 weeks hv suggested we put give him two spoons of baby rice, the gavicson that he had been on, stopped working, also we put him on sma staydown milk. He is now weaning and we have found that its no where near as bad as it was. Can you get an appointment at the doctors sooner.

Can you asked to be referred to a children's doctor.

  • Our daughter had reflux and it got to the point where she had to be monitored all day in hospital at 2 months old. She was then on gaviscon (prescribed) for months, and on the doctor's advice we started weaning her at 4 months old which really helped, she kept the food down fine. However she had a really bad association with milk for a long time, but since we switched her to cows milk at 12 months and she had it out of a cup, she now enjoys it.

Go back to the doctor if you're not happy, it took us 3 times with 3 different doctors before anyone listened to us. And the gaviscon did help, then once we started weaning we made sure she got her dairy portions from yoghurt and cheese. I know it seems like it will never end at the time, but it will get better xx

Is it just the GP who is seeing him or a general hospital paediatrician? My little one had a dairy intolerance and bad reflux diagnosed when he was 5 months. He'd been constantly sick with bad poos since he was born and wasn't putting on weight. The general hospital paediatrician couldn't resolve it with medication and referred us to a paediatric gastroenterologist. We had a complicated regime of feeding and meds - he had neocate milk, protein thickener, an anti emetic and a drug to contol the amount of stomach acid he produced, plus a strict regime of when and how much to feed and he was weaned at 4 months rather than 6, again with a strict regime of what to give, how much and what time. He still vomited a little until he was about 12 months but was a lot better than he had been and. Put on weight well. When he was 12 months we were able to gradually reintroduce dairy products and wean him off the medicine. He's now 16 months, fit and healthy and on the 50th weight centile.

So, not medical advice, but of you aren't getting anywhere ask for a referral to a specialist gastroenterologist. We kept being told that if ds didn't improve he would need surgery to reconstruct the pyloric valve but he didn't have to have this in the end. However, there are ways of managing reflux and dairy intolerance however severe, so just because you haven't found the solution yet for your little one don't give up hope.

Both my sons suffered from reflux and it didn't stop until they were about a year old in both cases. They were both breastfed so no bottle to put Gaviscon in, but back then we weaned at around 3 months. With DS1 they didn't offer any treatment, said he'd grow out of it, and although a bit lower on the percentile scales than average, he was still healthy, lively, active. With DS2 once he got to 4 months old they did offer Gaviscon to take with his food. When I asked why they'd not done anything first time but seemed happy to prescribe for DS2 they said it was more for my benefit...they saw me when I had a sniffly 2 yr old and a baby who was in his 4th change of clothing and on 12th bib of the day and it was only 2pm and I felt like ****
I cant comment on the milk intolerance but the reflux DOES get better. It's horrible seeing them being sick all the time but they do grow out of it in most cases and are fine

We were started on gaviscon before the milk intolerance was diagnosed. I was breastfeeding too but apparently you can be intolerant to breast milk as well as formula! I was told to mix the gaviscon sachets in a little water or EBM and syringe it into his mouth before each feed. So it is possible to treat with meds even when bf.
  • Hi

My baby was very smilar to how you describe except this was with b/f we luckily got referred to allergy clinic & she tested positive for dairy allergy & soya allergy so i cut all these from my diet & continued to feed her she was a changed baby within a week!! she is now on prescription formula.
Perhaps see if you can get a referral for allergy testing no harm exploring all possible causes.
I hope the situation is resolved for you & baby swiftly

  • Our little man has silent reflux which made him very unhappy. He's been on ranitidine for about 4 months now (he's 7 months) and it has worked a treat for us, we've also been weaning for about a month and I think that's been helping too, it does get better! I knew something wasn't right but the first doctor we saw dismissed reflux as a marketing gimmick!?! He's so much better now, he used to cry every day, if he was awake he was crying. Nicki, I thought it was cow's milk protein in breastmilk rather than the breastmilk itself that babies can be intolerent to? You're right about the gaviscon when breastfeeding, this is what I did until it stopped working.
